How would you feel/react if ..

..you were seated at the counter of an extremely busy coffee shop, had ordered, already been served soup/salad, your full meal had arrived, you were eating it, and literally with your fork about to enter your mouth, the guy two seats to the right of you asks both you and the guy to your right to get up and move all of your food, drink, utensils, etc down to free up a seat for his GF. I have happily moved when my order hadn't been taken, when I just had a soda, or even just salad. But I have never had anyone be as tacky as to ask me (and another party as well) to move *in the middle of a meal.* I certainly gave him a LOOK, and it was not a happy one. Then he went all p i s s y with a loud "oh, WELL, if it's too much TROUBLE, then never mind." I did move, but I thought his request at the stage of the meals was tacky and rude. He went on to be loudly self-important with the server as well. What do you think?

no big deal for me if i was sitting at a counter or at a bar.....i would have just slid everything down and moved.

Once I committed to giving him ""the look"" instead of moving I would most certainly not have moved after he made that comment. All that did was empower him to intimidate or embarrass someone else next time he wanted his way.

I would have moved. I've been in the situation that guy was in with a friend/sister who was hoping to sit next to me, and I've never had anyone not do it. Of course I thanked them and mentioned how appreciative I was.

Moonchilde, I can sympathize. He was rude and personally, I would have told him I was unable to get up. No excuses, and then I would simply have ignored him. I guess I have just lived a long time and do what I want and I don't care if some stranger thinks I'm not nice.

It was a crowded coffee shop and he needed two seats together.

It wasn't a big deal.

It's just kind (and easier) to comply. No reason to feel put out.

But she did feel put out and she is entitled to feel that way. What kind of a person sees someone eating their meal and asks them to move everything? A rude person..and when someone is rude, not everyone has to jump up and obey.

You moved anyway...and it must have been uncomfortable being so close to them after you acted so huffy.

I "acted huffy?" I gave him an unhappy look because he could clearly see I was actively eating as he was asking. He did not actually say "sorry" to indicate he thought it was the slightest inconvenience. And it would not have been an inconvenience, nor would I have thought twice about it, if I had not been in the middle of a meal. Not the beginning before I was served food, and not the end. The.middle. Nor would I have minded all that much if he'd asked in a different way, as in "I'm so sorry to ask you at this point, but would you mind.." I don't know - I guess it's considered odd to expect the smallest bit of forethought and consideration when being asked to do something that's inconvenient. Not inconvenient like moving a water glass, but moving glass, a bowl and a full plate, silverware while eating.

But then, I knew I'd be in for it the moment I posted the OP, because people don't actually read what posters have said, they often respond as if you've said what you've taken pains to explain did not happen. I'm not surprised - or embarrassed either, sorry.

She said she had her meal, water glass, utensils etc in front of her. When he asked she was eating her meal. What he did was rude and clearly no real reason why she had to accommodate him.

Yes. Stand up...one step to the right (or left) two hands scoot over plates. 10 Seconds tops. Everyone is happy and has a seat.
