No. Why would any friend say bad things to your face? Disagree with you, yes. Tell you the truth when you need to hear it, but not say bad things to your face.

I used to know someone like that, she always said what she thought about people she was around, and so many people came to actually hate her. That included one of her own children and their spouse.

I do not take literally what is written...that friends say bad things to you. I interpreted it as they will tell you the truth to your face and not talk about them behind your back.

For me, this is a definite YES. I do not tell my friends what they want to hear; I tell them what they need to hear, even if it bursts their bubble and makes them face the reality they want to avoid. More than once my friends have told me that I am the most honest, up front friend they have, and they value the fact I keep it real. This phrase describes exactly my very closest circle of friends.

Once again we agree, croemer! That's the way I took it. A good friend will not put you down to other people behind your back, but they will tell you the truth to your face if it's something they think you really need to know. Always telling you the truth, even if it hurts, is one of the best things about a good friend.

That's a little too black and white. It's entirely dependent on the situation, the subject matter, whether the friend is a bossy and controlling type, or is concerned, etc.

This post doesn't say HOW they said it, just that they do say the "bad things" to your face. I do think true friends have to talk to you sometimes about the bad things, meaning horrible choices or that you have your skirt tucked into your panties when you walk out of the bathroom.
