14K Gold Jewelry

I bought a 14k gold chain a number of years ago and it tarnished. Has anyone had this experience? I tried jewelry cleaner and that didn't work so I just threw it away.

I have very old 14k gold that I inherited and it was darkened. I soaked it in jewelry cleaner for hours and it came out beautiful.

Hovis, if that ever happens to you again, before you throw it out have it tested. Gold does oxidize and a jeweler can either professionally clean it or polish it to look new again.

If your gold is set with stones that are soft do not soak them in a liquid cleaner. It could discolor or damage them.

Nooooo!!!!! You didn't throw out gold jewelry did you?? Well, if it tarnished that bad and wouldn't clean up, then it was probably plated. Get yourself a loupe and check your jewelry for karat markings before throwing it out. Gold is valuable and can always be sold.

Gold is composed of several metals. 24 karat gold (pure) will not tarnish, but will easily bend. That is why gold is combined with other metals, which will in time turn, but with the proper polishing can return to its original luster. Sometimes silver is plated with thin gold(vermeil) and this may not come up gold upon polishing. If that item is loved, it can be replated.
