Snowden wants to return

It seems that Edward Snowden doesn't want to stay in Mother Russia and is trying to come back to the U.S. Wonder what he thinks about the mysterious recent death of Boris Nmetsov, Putin's greatest critic in Russia? If you buck the government there, you either end up with Polonium poisoning or you're shot to death just blocks from the Kremlln. U.S. soil and court system is looking pretty good to Eddie these days.

I think he's willing to face charges and a trial. It would be a good thing for this country to have what he did discussed in open court.

I remember when Valerie Plame's status was released for political reasons and some thought that was acceptable. It wasn't, she organized international spies for America, and by disclosing who she was and what she did, their lives and the lives of their families were put in danger.

Snowden had no idea what the ramifications of his info release could mean.

Revealing state secrets have turned into Oscar acclaim for the makers of the Edward Snowden documentary "Citizenfour."

I was rather surprised that it won and even more to hear Laura Poitra refer to him merely as a whistle blower.

To some he is a hero; to others he is a traitor, and this time there are both sides of the political spectrum in agreement for the most part. The U.S. has always had spies and surveillance, some at the hands of old Ma Belle. Never before have they had to contend with social media on the internet. It's a new ballgame, and we are engaged in a new struggle to gather information and keep our people safe, even from people who live here. Those who engage in espionage know full well when they get into it what it entails. There should have been no surprises. Supplying any of that information to others is considered treason and a compromise of our security. If he was sincerely concerned about what he saw as being illegal, he should have retained a lawyer, confronted the powers that be about his concerns, and alluded to violations in a general manner without ruining our standing with our allies as well as jeopardizing possible negotiations with our detractors or enemies. Snowden's lawyer is trying to negotiate leniency in a court trial, even though he really isn't in a position to be negotiating. We don't have to play ball and he is stuck in the "cradle of individual freedoms," Russia.

We never would have found out how much information the government can get WITHOUT a warrent or probable cause except for Snowden. We now know that ATandT and Google freely give information to the government. I personally doubt he can get a fair trial. What evidence is there that information he disclosed cost lives? Please cite sources other than Blaze or Breitbart.

If you are talking to me, I never said anything about costing lives. He compromised our national security with his revelations to others in the world. So A, T & T and Google supply info. So did Ma Belle in the past. Check out J Edgar Hoover's obsessions with spying on citizens and WHAT it was he was looking at. This democracy has ALWAYS had espionage, whether you want to believe it or not. If Snowden really wanted to do something about what concerned him, he picked a very strange way of doing so. It's hilarious that he ended up in Russia of all places. Don't think for one minute that Putin didn't get something out of granting asylum. Once again, if you are talking to me with your comment about the Blaze and Breitbart, you are hilariously mistaken. You don't really want to hear what I think of either of those sites because it's ain't pretty.

I consider him neither a traitor nor a hero. But I am more concerned with the continuing growth of illegal and immoral activities of our government institutions that have been going on since after World War II against our own citizens and innocent citizens of other countries. MonsterMind, Eye5, and dozens of other secret surveillance operations that have been created to spy on citizens for doing nothing more than protesting wars or policies.

If anyone wants to throw the "traitor" label around, you have only to look within our own government administrations--past and present--to find more serious and appropriate targets than Edward Snowden to which to attach that label. Oh, and you can add the labels "murderers" and "war criminals" to some of them, too.

I think that what Snowden revealed about what is going on in secret under the dubious name of "national security" is much more important than his actions. And, apparently, so do many of our "friends" in other countries and lawmakers right here in our own country, witnessed by the immediate sanctions and restrictions and laws put into place following the revelations.

I freely admit I am liberal but there are many conservatives and libertarians who resent the government spying on its citizens in the name of Homeland Security. Just because it's been done in the past doesn't make it right. Due to computer data gathering, the government is more invasive than ever. Do I feel any safer with cameras on every street corner?
