My issue with the issue is removing freedom of choice.

MD's are "here's your prescriptions, you'll be My Patient For Life, Now, Won't You"?

God forbid we actually let our immune systems function properly and get healthy. It might mean a few days off work.

I don't think the article made a lot of sense. Of course, if a child has an allergic reaction to a vaccine, he shouldn't be vaccinated again. Individual children can always be exempt from medication or vaccination for valid medical reasons. However, the public health should be endangered because some one doesn't "believe" in vaccination any more than children should be allowed to smoke marijuana because a parent believes it will expand their horizons.

I have no problem with parents opting out of vaccinations for their kids for LEGITIMATE health reasons. In fact, states that mandate vaccinations allow that. But parents shouldn't be allowed to opt out for philosophical or psuedo-science reasons or just plain ignorance. Every parent has a right to put their own child at risk but they do not have a right to put other people's children at risk and that is what happens when we allow people to opt out of vaccinations. Like it or not, for the good of society, we all have to do things that we aren't particularly happy about. It's not like vaccinations are brand new and untested and it's not like the Small pox, measles, ruebella etc aren't serious diseases.

Children before the age of 1 or children with suppressed immune systems can have problems with measles if exposed to a child not vaccinated. I think it was Noel that posted about herd immunity? If enough people opt out of vaccines, we are going to see the return of diseases that we haven't seen in years.

Besides the very young and immune compromised who cannot be vaccinated, there are others.

There are elderly who never were vaccinated and would be very vulnerable.

Also, the poor population often has little medical help and don't always have access to vaccinations.

There are important issues when the good of society has to take precedence over individual rights. It's the price we pay for living in society.

And those children grow into adulthood and are placed at risk by those who were not vaccinated for non medical reasons.

interesting again............I happened to be one of those parents of a child with a compromised immune system............actually two sons.........the only one of my kids to be fully vaccinated was the first born, none of the others, after what we went through with the second son and a reaction to a vaccination that put him in the hospital at 3 months of age

And there in lies the problem with vaccinations.........one son did perfectly fine, the other ended up in the hospital in serious condition.........how to tell which child will be affected and which one won't.......I make no apologies for my focus being the safety of MY OWN children........so I hold no grudge for ANY parent who chooses not to vaccinate......nor do I hold it for those that do.................................raven

My husband works for a radiation therapy company- all of them had to be medically certified in order to enter hospitals- that meant they all had to be vaccinated & show proof of being vaccinated when they were younger, mine showed his military records. This was and is mandatory per certain hospitals- these men couldn't refuse or else lose their jobs.

I can see if the child had a vaccine and was allergic to it or something then its up to their Dr to decide.

But these people saying Im not vaccinating my child because I don't believe in it and it causes autism. Well they are a bunch of wackos!

Austism is NOT caused by vaccines. I know this because my friends nephew has autism and they have been all over the USA (even moving their residence) to help their autistic child. They were told time and time again vaccines did not cause their sons autism!

Thankfully where my children went to school and where my grandchildren now go to school if they aren't vaccinated they cant come to school. And that goes on through their entire school life as records must keep being updated as they get the age appropriate shots.

Medicaid? Healthcare for poor folk. Free vaccines at many local health departments.

formerly of the working poor I made too much to qualify for the free stuff and no employer provided health care. I did the wrong thing. I went to work.

I would have to agree that the argument that poor people don't always have access to medical help or vaccinations is incorrect. Unless, of course, they are hill people living in the remote areas of the US where there are no doctors.
