In fact, states that mandate vaccinations allow that. But parents shouldn't be allowed to opt out for philosophical or psuedo-science reasons or just plain ignorance. Every parent has a right to put their own child at risk but they do not have a right to put other people's children at risk and that is what happens when we allow people to opt out of vaccinations. Like it or not, for the good of society, we all have to do things that we aren't particularly happy about. It's not like vaccinations are brand new and untested and it's not like the Small pox, measles, ruebella etc aren't serious diseases.

Since other parents have the right to vaccinate their child and therefore remove the health risk presented by those unvaccinated it's not a public health concern sufficient to require giving up one's rights. Even unvaccinated, the measles is not fatal in most people, so again not sufficient to force people to give up the right to choose what's put into their body or the bodies of their children.

Measles is one of the leading causes of death among young children even though a safe and cost-effective vaccine is available.

In 2013, there were 145 700 measles deaths globally – about 400 deaths every day or 16 deaths every hour.

Measles vaccination resulted in a 75% drop in measles deaths between 2000 and 2013 worldwide.

In 2013, about 84% of the world's children received one dose of measles vaccine by their first birthday through routine health services – up from 73% in 2000.

During 2000-2013, measles vaccination prevented an estimated 15.6 million deaths making measles vaccine one of the best buys in public health.

from the world health organization

http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs286/en/

The death rate from measles is 1 in 333, when you apply that to a population of 300million it adds up to lots of friends and family dying from a now preventable disease.

Adverse effects from the measles vaccine is 1 in 146,000

I don't think the article made a lot of sense. Of course, if a child has an allergic reaction to a vaccine, he shouldn't be vaccinated again. Individual children can always be exempt from medication or vaccination for valid medical reasons. However, the public health should be endangered because some one doesn't "believe" in vaccination any more than children should be allowed to smoke marijuana because a parent believes it will expand their horizons.

"they do not have the right to put other people's children at risk" .......interesting.......IF your child HAS been vaccinated it's NOT at risk........the only child at risk would be the non-vaccinated one.

"It's not like vaccinations are brand new and untested"........you say that as if you believe they are 100% safe.............they aren't....... $724 million (as of January 1997) in compensation has been paid under the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986 since its inception.................................................raven

Some children are too young to be vaccinated and others have compromised immune systems and can't be vaccinated. It is these children who are put at risk by parents who refuse to have children vaccinated for non medical reasons.

interesting again............I happened to be one of those parents of a child with a compromised immune system............actually two sons.........the only one of my kids to be fully vaccinated was the first born, none of the others, after what we went through with the second son and a reaction to a vaccination that put him in the hospital at 3 months of age

And there in lies the problem with vaccinations.........one son did perfectly fine, the other ended up in the hospital in serious condition.........how to tell which child will be affected and which one won't.......I make no apologies for my focus being the safety of MY OWN children........so I hold no grudge for ANY parent who chooses not to vaccinate......nor do I hold it for those that do.................................raven

My husband works for a radiation therapy company- all of them had to be medically certified in order to enter hospitals- that meant they all had to be vaccinated & show proof of being vaccinated when they were younger, mine showed his military records. This was and is mandatory per certain hospitals- these men couldn't refuse or else lose their jobs.

I can see if the child had a vaccine and was allergic to it or something then its up to their Dr to decide.

But these people saying Im not vaccinating my child because I don't believe in it and it causes autism. Well they are a bunch of wackos!

Austism is NOT caused by vaccines. I know this because my friends nephew has autism and they have been all over the USA (even moving their residence) to help their autistic child. They were told time and time again vaccines did not cause their sons autism!

Thankfully where my children went to school and where my grandchildren now go to school if they aren't vaccinated they cant come to school. And that goes on through their entire school life as records must keep being updated as they get the age appropriate shots.
