This must have been a perfect storm of hoarding, illness and distant relatives or friends. Late 60's alone isn't so old. I'm surprised they owned snakes only because usually younger people who have them grow out of that sort of hobby.

This morning our local news covered the story of an elderly couple whose lives were totally out of control. They were ill and had to be removed from their home which was considered unfit to even live in. That's what happens when the elderly are isolated and have no one checking on them. And the poor animals....this just hurts to hear about.

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/Ailing-couple-rescued-from-Belfair-home-filled-with-feces-dogs-dead-animals-292069691.html

Oh my! I can't allow myself to think of it. I'm too close to being there -- with my one dog.

It DOES give one pause to think, doesn't it? However, most of us have family or friends that keep in touch. It sounds as if these people didn't.

My sadness for them is that they didn't get help many years earlier. Like other hoarders, they may have had past offers from friends or family to help but refused it. The privacy signs are an indicator.

Having friends and family check in is a blessing. I prepared my last will and testament so my kids know what to do with my estate - but my main concern was for the care of my pooch should I go first. In my will I bequeathed her to my best friend (checking with her first, of course). I emailed her where in my house to locate her vet records, gave her the type of food she eats (she cannot tolerate grain in her food), explained when to administer her daily medication, gave her the chip number, the number of her vet, etc., etc.

My BF called and thanked me for providing all of this in writing. She has a file for my dog with all of the details in it.

I can rest assured that my fur baby will be dearly loved until we meet again.

BTW: my dog adores my BF. She's taken care of her while I needed dog sitting many, many times. Her home is my dog's home away from home. And, the bonus is she will have a Pomeranian play mate!
