Yes, I know it's a book and I know it was a series in Australia and I know it's also about relationships - but my question is - how would you handle this if it had been your child?

And are you going to watch this mini-series?

I want to watch this.

There would be no one hitting my child ever. That is something I feel really strongly about and if anyone ever hit my daughter or grandson, people would literally be peeling me off of that person.

I am sitting here watching TV with my husband and I mentioned the topic of this thread to him and he said Oh Lord, I would make sure I had bail money.

I would have spoken directly and sternly to the slapper, excused myself to the host, taken my child home, and had a calm talk with the child about adults who don't control their tempers. If my child was misbehaving, I would have taken action about that, also.

I would not expect one such incident to "scar a child for life", nor (unless the child was injured) would it be an impetus for legal action. I haven't seen the series, but I've seen the promotional TV trailers -- and it appears to me to be an unfortunate incident that is totally blown out of proportion. The amount of damage such an incident does to a child is largely dependent on how the child's parents and family handle the incident, how they explain it to the child, and whether the child knows that his family cares for him and will do their best to protect him from harm. It doesn't help if the adults in the child's life go berserk, fly off the handle, and make an international incident out of the event.

From what I have read, this is an 8 part mini-series. Each episode will tell the story from a different person's perspective but not come to any conclusions.

I've seen only one trailer and in it someone says "the brat deserved it". This was after it looked like the boy was going to take a swing at another boy with the bat, a man intervened, the kid kicked him and the man slapped him.

No, I won't be watching. I have NBC and ABC taping and I'm not sure this mini-series would hold my interest.

I watched and wondered why they invited this threesome. The child was destructive and obnoxious. The mother made little effort to keep him from damaging the host's property, the father did nothing.

The slapper should have just taken the bat and told the parents to control their child.

I have to say, the child is a good actor.

I was thinking about watching, it comes on in a few minutes but now I'm not sure.

It might be good to realize how one event can be seen very differently from different points of view and angles. Maybe we should all watch it for the sake of "viewpoints".

I watched it. It's about more than the slap.

I couldn't figure out how the parents of the kid were connected to the hosts of the party. Do you know OR? Were they relatives or neighbors or friends or what? The "slapper" is a cousin.

Oy! This is not about the slap in itself but the catalyst of changes brought about by one violent and unthinking moment! Grown-up TV at its finest. I'm truly sick to death of kiddie shows dressed in grown-up clothing. I prefer great writing and acting to big names and so-so scripts. This sure got my attention and approval! Loved it!
