When "icons" fall

MJ, Cosby, numerous football/sports "heroes," and now Brian Williams, and I'm sure there are many more. That's why I don't "hero worship" anyone. Though the crimes vary greatly, these individuals were thought to be perfect before the fall. We should never expect anyone to be "perfect."

Our children who go to war for us and give their lives are my only exception.

Do you have heroes that you still worship? And I'm not specifically eliminating family members, but it would be interesting if we could keep it to public figures.

There are many public figures that I admire, but in my case I would not use the word, "worship". It is tough to see them fall, especially if they're one of your role models, but they're human and are just as apt to fall as anyone else.

I have always admired Martin Luther King and Gandhi for their encouragement of peaceful resistance. I only worship Jesus.

No one is perfect....but many have admirable qualities I'd like to emulate.

I don't see life as black and white...there are many gradations of gray.

My mother is the only, ONLY hero I worship/excessively admire.

All other people, even though they are highy accomplished in their fields, are just regular folk like me. The doctor who saves me, the military that protects me, even the Pontiff himself just...gets up & brush their teeth like me..normal folk.

Never been disappointed.

Hero worship??? I'm 54, I haven't had "hero" since I was 9 years old and didn't know any better. Why would anyone worship any entertainer anyway? Certainly, there are entertainers, sportsmen and women, politicians, educators etc that I respect for their achievements but I never forget that they are human beings just like the rest of us. And as humans, they are no better or worse than anyone else. The Brian Williams thing only surpised me because it was such dumb and pointless thing to do. He lied and he got called out on it. I don't think it's such a big deal at all.

""Hero worship"" just means excessive admiration. I did not mean it in the terms of ""worshipping"" as one would do in church. Guess I used the wrong word again.

Worship? No.

I don't even follow entertainers/movie actors/actress/singers/rock stars lives, etc. Don't read or buy the gossip rags.

I can't even keep my own life straight! How the heck can one find time to follow others?

I get the point you are trying to make Ford. The biggest disappointment for me was Bill Cosby. I used to think he was super nice guy, loved his smile and felt good whenever I watched his show. Disappointment big time.

I think people forget that these athletes, movie stars and singers are just people. They are not to be idolized. No one should. People will always fail. You can admire their work. But to admire them so much it clouds your judgment is going to be the cause for a huge disappointment. I have noticed this being done on this board. No matter what horrible life a person leads, they still place these people on a pedestal as people to be admired. Very sad.

I think I get it, Ford. I save that kind of admiration for our soldiers, people who help other people quietly, and the like. We are all only human, after all. I love other people, but feel that only our maker is perfect, so I don't understand excessive adirmation for people in the public eye.

I agree. Only Jesus Christ is perfect and still is.

There are plenty of fan clubs for people who worship celebs. These fans show up on the red carpet, travel state to state, even sleep with them if they can (groupies).

For me Bill Cosby and Tiger Woods falls from grace were more disappointing than Brian Williams. BW as an important job but after Dan Rathers who can be surprised what any press person would sink to.

I only worship God -- I have no false idols or icons. I do worry about some young and impressionable types who look to celebs as role models. Many of which seem troubled in disturbing ways even long before they fall, or are taken down by the media.

Oh my, how could I forget Tiger. I never watched golf until he came along and did not watch tournaments that he was not in. Yes, that was a big shock to me. But he is paying for it, he's never come back from what he once was.

I have forgotten what Dan Rather did.
