topic Question re layering Cricut pieces in Community Chat

I just received my Personal Cricut last week, and started to work with it last night. I got the operation of the unit down pretty quickly, even though the instructions are far less than adequate. But, I'm not understanding the layering of the pieces. For instance, if I look at the guide, it shows a row of cut outs that need to be assembled in layers, but I don't know in what order I'm supposed to place them. Placing them in the order of the chart doesn't seem to work, at least not on the cartridge that I'm using, which is The Best of 2006. I'm working with the Christmas images, mainly the Christmas ornament.

Plus, I need to use contrasting colors for shadows, highlights, etc. But, the thing is in shades of black and gray, so it's hard to figure out how many color changes are necessary.

Does anyone know of a good website that explains this. I've checked out a few, and they seemed to make sense. But, when I went back to my cartridge, it didn't work.

I'm hoping that there is a simple explanation that I'm just missing. And, once I find it, everything will fall into place.

The instruction book is horrible.
