From Mickey

On November 30th, after almost 16 years of unwavering love, my husband and I were forced to make the terribly difficult decision of putting our pug, Mickey, to sleep. He had reached the point of almost total blindness, deafness and arthritic inability to comfortably walk or eat on his own. The next day, after 24 hours of sadness and grieving, my husband gave me a beautiful card from Mickey, along with the following poem. Now each time I read it, it somehow gives me a bit of comfort because I feel that this is truly what Mickey was feeling. As a bit of further background, we had faced a similar plight several years earlier with our 10-year-old Shitszu, Minnie, who had developed a terminal illness. While alive, although much smaller in size, she had actually been the alpha dog in her relationship with Mickey, often nipping and growling at him when she thought he had intruded on her space.

Here’s my boundless love to you, dearest Mom,

For the million treats so yummy,

For the soft, caressing strokes you gave

Along my head and tummy

For your tireless, doting love abound

For romping walks with leaves on ground,

For scrubbing all my “accidents,”

For baths and towels of clean, fresh scents,

For cuddling me up to bed each night,

For the rich life I led of pure delight.

And now my heart celebrates, dearest love,

For giving me new peace,

For giving me the grace above

Where aches and pains now cease,

For giving me the joy once more

To see and hear and run,

For giving me the youth and strength

To once again have fun,

And for giving me our Minnie back –

Her yips and nips and grrrs,

Which, to truly tell, dear Mom,

Have now turned to licks and purrs.

So, we rejoice for the most abundant lives

Any family’s pets could live.

Know always that all our love for you

Our brimming souls do give.

One day again yet another year

Our loving touch will recombine;

Until then, know that we’re glowing here,

And we both are doing fine!
