What Are You Reading --- February 2015

This book thread is started on the first of each month.

Some suggestions for posting here:

~ underline, bold or CAPITALIZE the name of the book you're reading - it makes it easier for us readers to see what it is

~ include the author of the book - there are so many books with the same title (if you are recommending a book we want to make sure we read the right one!)

~ post a few words about the book - would you recommend it or not

~ tell us the book genre - is it mystery, romance, historical, biography, etc.

***There is no obligation to do any of the above.

February already! I can't believe I only read one book in the month of January...don't know why I'm just not reading that much anymore. Need to change that!

Now I'm starting Dead Heat by Allison Brennan.

January went by quickly! I enjoyed several books last month: We Were Liars by E. Lockhart, Plainsong by Kent Haruf, and Still Alice by Lisa Genova. They were all engaging, worthwhile reads.

I finished THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN last night. I liked it. It's similar in a way to Gone Girl. I have an older Michael Connelly and an older Lee Child book on my Kindle until my next library title comes in.

Hi Ladies--Just started The Last Letter from Your Lover, by Jojo Moyes (I'm sorry, but my dang iPad won't allow me to bold or underline). I've enjoyed a few of her books in recent months. Enjoyable, usually quick reads for me.

Just finished Night Heron by Adam Brookes. I think if you're Chinese you would really like it but it was way over my head. Spy stuff. I really and truly don't know how I read it but it kept me reading. The last chapters were really good but it took a while to get to them. He's quite a writer.

Just finished two books:

Lydia's Party by Margaret Hawkins. I can't recommend this book; it's boring and depressing. None of the characters were developed enough to make me care about them. Sorry, wish I could find something nice to say about it, but it was a bomb.

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. This book is everything Lydia's Party wasn't. Fascinating characters, plot twists, and a good mystery. I enjoyed every bit of it. If you liked The Other Typist or Gone Girl, you'll enjoy this book, I'm sure of it.

Have just finished a very old (pub.1969) book by Anne Tyler, A SLIPPING DOWN LIFE, which I found interesting, the characters were certainly different from those I usually read about. I am planning to start THE SISTERS by Nancy Jensen, her first novel. I have a long list of books recommended by readers on this site, it will be a difficult choice after this.

I thoroughly enjoyed Liane Moriarty's Big Little Lies. She is such a clever writer. This was every bit as good as The Husband's Secret.

Now I'm reading Five Days Left, a first novelby Julie Lawson Timmer. I haven't formed much of an opinion yet other than it's a depressing subject, Huntington Disease. That does not make it a bad book if the writing is good. That's what I can't quite tell yet.

Absolutely loving Kate Forsyth's Bitter Greens. Great historical fiction that's hard to put down. A retelling of the Rapunzel tale, but so much more. Highly recommended!

I thought they were fantastic! I think I liked Dark Places better than Gone Girl, which I really liked. I read The Girl On the Train by Paula Hawkins, which is being compared to Gone Girl. I did not like it nearly as much as Gillian Flynn's books. I thought it was a very poor copy.

I just finished James Patterson's latest, "PRIVATE: VEGAS", and it was pretty good. His books are not what they used to be, since he started using co-authors, but this book was much better than the recent Private books set in Australia and India. Hardly any of the book takes place in Vegas, so the title is misleading, but I guess he wanted to use an exciting locale as the title.

Finished Hemingway. Yay, me! That was one tough read and I'm happy to say a farewell to "A Farewell to Arms." I felt like I was back in school assigned a book I didn't like. I learned something, and yechhhh.

Now I'm reading "American Dervish" by Ayad Akhtar. It's an excellent first novel about an immigrant family, part of a community of Pakistani Muslims. Mostly a coming-of-age story of the boy who narrates and the tale of love between a Pakistani immigrant and a Jewish man. It's very good so far but I am in general sick of books narrated by tweens (Flavia excepted).

I'm still waiting on Flavia, but I did get to download The Girl On The Train today. I have another book to finish first (Bel Canto - it's boring me to death but I plan on finishing it).

I actually really liked The Girl on the Train (as well as Gone Girl), so I will check out Gillian Flynn's other books.

lol, smokymtngal, I read Bel Canto ages ago. I don't remember it being that bad, but it wasn't that memorable either. I just remember it was some kind of hostage situation, which is why I laughed at your comment. Doesn't say much for the book when a hostage situation is boring, does it?
