Just curious. Years ago when I started working, one of my newly made friends was from NYC, and she said she stood on line and I said I stand in line I (California). We were always trying to prove to each other, without success, that we were right. What do you say--on or in??? Is this a regional preference?

Thanks!

"In" line, and "by" accident, as opposed to the kids nowadays who say "on" accident, etc. No proper grammar being taught in the schools, because the teachers were not taught, terrible that in this country proper grammar cannot be taught. People learning English as a second language speak better grammar than students in this country, a sore spot for me.

In line is correct, on line only applies if you are standing ON a physical line. If I'm waiting to buy movie tickets, I'm IN line. If someone draws a line in the sand and I stand on it, I am ON the line. I avoid lines whenever possible, I have to need or want something badly before I'll stand in a long line.

Born and raised in Queens (NYC) and we wait on line there. I've lived in lots of other states since then and I've dropped the heavy Noo Yawk accent I had when I was younger, but I can't shake waiting on line. It's all good.

Just regional, I assumed.

That's interesting. In the Midwest there were lots of German and Scandinavian immigrants. "Warte auf mich" (literally 'wait on me') is how you say "wait for me" in German. I wonder if that had an influence on the language.
