On 1/28/2015 luvpoos said:
Well were we live it was a big blizzard, 3+ feet of snow. Much damage to homes along the coast because of flooding ocean water. Massive power outages. It was not a snooze fest at all. You're lucky if you weren't affected too much.

Hope you fared Ok, luvpoos. Are you on the coast in Kingston? SOme of the pictures from Scituate and Marshfield are scary.

We lost cable, internet and phones but not power so we missed the wall-to-wall coverage. We did evacuate our DIL and Grandkids from neighboring Pembroke up here to Quincy because they all had the flu and we didn't want a repeat of NEMO when they couldn't get out of their house (1/4 mile driveway) for 3 days (were sick then, too) and had no heat or phone service.

I appreciate all the work the meteorologists do to keep us safe and informed. The road along the beach here was flooded so without advanced warning, we wouldn't have been able to stock up and hunker down. This year we were well prepared and though we are still digging out here we managed to stay warm.

Reporters are more interested in the focus being on how clever they are than what is really happening. This one definitely has no ambitions for moving beyond his local little paper or channel. Eastern Mass is being hit right now. No, it's not "snowmaggeddon" but that was also reporters being more interested in appearing clever. However, with almost 18" of snow right now, a visibility of about 20 yards, and about 14 more hours of this to go, those of us in its path don't find it a "snore." I live in New England because I love this kind of stuff but I'd have no problem with that poor, bored reporter coming and snow raking off my roof when it's all over.

I'm not mocking at all the severity of the situation for certain locales. But the local politicians and meteorologists are starting to get backlash for a perceived over-reaction. Personally, I think it is wise to always over anticipate, than be unprepared. But yeah, a lot of New Yorkers are pretty steamed...if one reads the comments on other sites. If nothing else, a lot of them have a lot of gallons of milk they have to drink!

Unfortunately, there existed a third weather model that was much more accurate and realistic, but wasn't brought up until after the travel bans were in place.

Next time, it's going to be much more difficult, if not impossible, to get New Yorkers to listen to "dire" weather warnings.

How stupid that anyone would ridicule the weather forecasters or public officials for taking the action they did with this storm. Our system is only as good as it is and Mother Nature can be unpredicatable. It's not an exact science. I for one am grateful that it didn't turn out to be as bad where I live. There are still areas that got hit pretty hard. I am also grateful that in taking the action they did there have been no tragedies with people being stranded in dangerous situations or loss of life. Officials are dammed if they do and dammed if they don't. People need to grow up.

I'll post what I wrote on the other thread.

It's always better to be over-prepared for these things rather than under-prepared, in my opinion. I think it's a blessing when the "big storm" turns into a smaller, more manageable one.

Unfortunately, we don't fund our agencies like NOAA very well, yet they certainly are the target of pretty harsh criticism. It seems we want "small government" until we look to the agencies for guidance or assistance, then we want them to be perfect and robust. I have read there's a newer, more accurate computer forecasting model that's being used in Europe and a similar one is being tested in the USA now.

On 1/27/2015 dooBdoo said:
On 1/27/2015 Marienkaefer2 said:
On 1/27/2015 Justina rae said:
How stupid that anyone would ridicule the weather forecasters or public officials for taking the action they did with this storm. Our system is only as good as it is and Mother Nature can be unpredicatable. It's not an exact science. I for one am grateful that it didn't turn out to be as bad where I live. There are still areas that got hit pretty hard. I am also grateful that in taking the action they did there have been no tragedies with people being stranded in dangerous situations or loss of life. Officials are dammed if they do and dammed if they don't. People need to grow up.

ITA.

I agree, too.

Actually, they had upgraded to the new one, which is why the revised forecast was starting to be used yesterday. CNN meteorologist said billions of dollars had been spent in the upgrade, and that the "US" version had predicted even better than the "European" version (engaging in a bit of "nationalism" by him). Unfortunately, the "wheel was in spin" at that point, so they downplayed the new model somewhat because the governors had already announced the shut-downs.

The good news is that people can start moving again as things are opening up earlier than expected, and the roads are fairly clear in NYC.
