I remember years ago a well-known singer was performing in Nashville, and suddenly started babbling, losing control of her senses and faculties, and had to be escorted off stage. I remember reading that being described as a breakdown.

And no, nothing like that ever happened to me personally.

pinkwblingplz, I'm sorry you or someone you know has experienced problems.

You might be referencing a short-term event perhaps lasting a few minutes or hours, which could be a panic attack. Or, if it's long-term, going on for days, you might be describing something different -- it could be depression, anxiety. Either way, it can be disabling and a very real problem.

Please, write down the symptoms, to give yourself clarity, and then call a trusted physician and use your list to explain. It will relieve part of the stress, just taking action and voicing your concerns to someone who knows you and can help.

I wish you the very best.

I had myself admitted to a mental ward and spent 7+days there.I will use the diagnosis of "Panic/Anxiety Attacks" and diagnosed "Clinical Depression". Those were my diagnosis. If in doubt? Seek professional help. I will never consider myself cured, but always in recovery. Each day is a new day for me.

Also, don't rule out other medical issues. A full medical check-up should be done, including blood work. I had the symptoms, years ago, of what I would describe as a complete "break down." Horrific anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, etc. It ended up being autoimmune thyroid disease. That little gland can wreak total havoc in your body!

a nervous breakdown is a term from years ago when people had a mental break. These days there's so many different symptoms to so many different diagnosis is it's best to be checked out thoroughly buy a mental health professional and not rely on people on a board like this. Because no it has not been replaced by major depressive disorder.

There are numerous emotional/mental conditions that could be considered a type of "nervous breakdown". The most important thing is to be checked out by your doctor to make sure there are no underlying physical conditions, and then be seen by a mental health professional. This is from the Mayo Clinic website:

The term "nervous breakdown" is sometimes used to describe a stressful situation in which someone becomes temporarily unable to function normally in day-to-day life. It's commonly understood to occur when life's demands become physically and emotionally overwhelming. The term was frequently used in the past to cover a variety of mental disorders, but it's used less often today.

Nervous breakdown isn't a medical term, however, nor does it indicate a specific mental illness. But that doesn't mean it's a normal or a healthy response to stress. A nervous breakdown may indicate an underlying mental health problem that needs attention, such as depression or anxiety.
