11 out of 12 Patriot team balls underinflated. FYI Colts did go to officials at halftime to register a complaint.

I don't watch football but did hear this on the news.....Weren't these balls used by both teams?...so if the balls were an advantage to one team they should have been an advantage to the other team too...correct?

Sorry Pqfan, didn't mean to ignore a fellow yinzer. (You are from Pgh aren't you?) Anywho, the only punishments mentioned so far, are 1. loss of a draft pick - which given their ranking won't be much of a punishment and 2. a fine. Most likely both will be levied and that will be it.

From ESPN

The investigation found the footballs were inflated 2 pounds per square inch below what's required by NFL regulations during the Pats' 45-7 victory over the Indianapolis Colts, according to sources.

Thanks Georgie. I was just feeling lonely and wanted to talk. This is really amazing news about these football's. I am from nj close enough.

OMGosh I just read an article about Super Bowl XXXVII and the Buccaneers quarterback admitted to paying someone 7500.00 dollars to ""scuff up"" the ONE HUNDRED balls that are used for a Super Bowl game. Apparently he didn't like playing with brand new footballs fresh out of the box.

But one difference . . . both teams play with the same footballs for the Super Bowl vs. swapping out between possessions in regulation season & playoff games.

No. Each offense has their own balls. In cold weather an under inflated ball is easier to throw and easier to catch.

It's also easier for a running back to squeeze harder onto the football and makes a fumble less likely.

Not making excuses for the Patriots, but I believe that shady stuff like this goes on in sports all the time. Some sports guys were talking on the radio this a.m. and they said that a player for the Packers prefers OVER-inflated footballs. He has a very strong grip and large hands and he'd rather play with balls that have too much air in them. They didn't say whether he had done anything about it during a game, but it goes to show that the temptation is always there.
