What would you do??

About a year and a half ago I was in a local deli where someone was letting you taste Iberian Ham. After trying a sliver, I was hooked and had to have some. When I looked at the price it said $99.99/lb. Well, I thought, I'll just wait until Christmas and get 2 ounces. Christmas came and went, but I hadn't purchased any. So I waited until Christmas of 2014. When I finally got to the store, I realized that the prize was now $149.99/lb. So I thought it was just too much money.

Perhaps if they don't raise the price again, I'll get 1 oz for Christmas 2015 for $9.38.

Just curious, at what price would you draw the line on something you really want?

Depends how much I want it and what my budget will allow. This ham would probably remain a mystery to my palate at that price.

would never pay that much.....that must be some tasty ham....my question would be...how much of it do they sell....or phrased another way...how long does it sit in that deli case before it goes bad and they toss it....

It would depend on what it was. Food is just a moments pleasure....I would never pay a lot for food. A TV, computer, new appliance....I might spend a lot more as I would enjoy it for a long time.

No ham is worth that amount of $$$$$$$$. I got a pretty darn good spiral sliced ham at Sam's for around $5 a pound over New Years Day.

Do you mean jamón ibérico? I sampled some a few years back. Did you find it at the 9th Street Market?

It kind of looks like Prosciutto, without all the salt. Nutty flavor because the pigs are fed a diet of acorns.

I've heard that jamón serrano @ around $21.99 (it's poorer relative) is also quite good but I never tried it.

I had to reread a couple times, because surely you didn't say ham lol. How much I would pay for something totally depends on what it is, but I doubt I would ever pay 10x more than what I could find another product for. Awkward sentence! How much is 1 oz. of ham anyway?

Yes, that's it exactly. I found it at Di Bruno Brothers in Philadelphia on 18th & Chestnut Streets. And it really sells well. Every time I go there the ham is smaller and smaller especially during the holidays.

I actually heard that it can sell for over $200.00/lb.

What would I do...I'd try the sample, say "thank you" then walk on by. They can keep their ham at that price.

A 9.5 lb. Jamon Serrano can be purchased at Costco.com for $200. That would be about $21/lb.

I believe that it is supposed to be made in a special way. It is supposed to be the best ham in the world. I wouldn't mind trying it.

Do they only sell this ham at Christmas time? Why are you always waiting until Christmas to buy it?

And no, I wouldn't buy it. If it tasted that good, I would want it all the time and I just can't afford to keep buying a ham that expensive.

If I want something bad, I buy it. I figure I work hard for my money and can spoil myself now and then. Occasionally now and then happens too often, but I'm working on it.

I think the opposite. Food is the most important thing to spend my money on. It's what nourishes me and keeps me healthy. I will spend more on high quality fresh food. However, I wouldn't spend $150/lb on ham.
