SO Upsetting!

I have two Himalayan cats. They are siblings and both male. Seven years old and have never been separated. Very loving and bonded. I had to take one to the vet yesterday and now the other one is hissing and acting all huffy around him. It makes my stomach hurt! The one who went to the vet is so bewildered it breaks my heart. How long is this going to last? I tried rubbing the one who went to the vet down and brushed him in an effort to get rid of the vet smell but the hissing is still going on. At least they are not actually fighting.

Try taking a small cloth and rubbing down each cat, and then rub the other cat.

I've heard once they get each others' scent, things will settle down. I've also heard this about introducing a new cat to a household.

Take the other cat to the vet and let it sit in the crate for about 15-20 minutes and then take it back home to the other cat

In the future take both cats to the vet each time even if only one is being seen. The other one will pick up the smell and all will be well when you get home. This is what the vet I use does with success.

Two of our dogs acted similarly years ago.....the one who didn't go to the vet was actually foaming at the mouth. We were quite upset and concerned. Sadly, per our vet, we had to closely monitor them for safety reasons and give it time. It took several days (ugh) but things gradually got better and then all was well again. It was very shocking to us and we were so worried, so I can understand how you must feel. Best wishes to you and keep us posted as you feel able.

I had this same problem in 2012 when Tiggi went to the vet for a dental, had 2 strokes,spent a week at the ER and when I brought her home, Stinky hated her from that point on. I tried everything and nothing worked. Tiggi eventually recovered from her strokes, but for the last 2 years I had to keep them separated. In November, they both died within a week apart.

So sorry to hear this although I adopted 2 kitties (brothers) 7 yrs ago after I took them to be nuetered they were never ""friendly"" to each other like prior to this vet visit. And they both became very anti-social towards anyone who comes to our home. I love both of them yet when we are alone they are constantly around me but not to each other. I wonder if the vet experience changed them & I take them together when they need vet visits now. (The vet has a room that smells like catnip or something I take both of them in together -- and boy do they hiss at each other & are brats when they come home for days!!!)

We are back to normal. I am so relieved. I get horrified when I read stories like some of these about permanent temperament changes. It took us from Thursday - Tuesday (today) to finally get back to the way things were. Yesterday we turned a corner and the hissing/growling ceased but things were still not quite right until this morning. I was SO GLAD. I have every intention of taking them both to the vet from this point on even if just one has to be seen. Funny but I had never heard of this before because this is the first time I've had more than one cat. But from what I've read it appears to be quite common.

Your kitty is picking up odors of other animals from the vet's office, and that is why your other cat doesn't recognize him.

This would happen to us too, and what I would do is take some X-O odor neutralizer and use some of it to wipe the kitty down who went to the vet's.

This would do the trick, and the other cat would stop hissing and swatting at the one who was at the vet's.
