JC closing in Hanover

Sears closing in Kingston (might have already!)

They are one exit apart on Rt 3.

(I don't happen to go to either store. If they closed the one on the Cape I wouldn't even notice! Used to go in for Land's End, but doing that online now)

Guess that makes me somewhat of a contributor to their problems, but Sears is just a glorified K-Mart now. Since K-Mart owns them I expected as much.

K-Mart's 'basic editions' is soooo similar to D&C it's disconcerting!

I haven't shopped there lately but that's always a shame. We only have one store in this small city, so I guess it's still doing ok. We did buy some living room furniture there about 3 years, or so, ago. It was all made in the US too.

Nothing in my area which is kind of shocking.

I do periodically go to Columbus to shop but rarely if ever do I go to Eastland Mall.

I have to go 20 miles to another town to shop JCP so I rarely do. i used to love , love , love to shop their catalogs though.

None near me. I can't remember the last time I bought anything at a JCP though.

I recently bought 2 pair of boots from them and 3 long sleeve t-shirts. I had a coupon for everything and it all shipped to me for free. Prior to that though, it had been years since I shopped with them.

State College is near Penn State. I was there before on business and that mall hardly has any good stores as it is. they're really gonna miss JC Penney IMO.

I like the store. Don't know why things are going bad for them. I do not shop.the little stores in my mall. Seems to me the clothes are marketed for the younger crowd and quality mot there. Just my opinion. This past holiday season I did very well purchasing clothes for my grandchildren with their coupons. I have birthdays in November December and January. Also got nice Christmas clothing gifts for them. I like to give clothes as a little extra gift with their toys. I remember the catalogue. What a great item that was. I still.purchase many items for myself and other family members.

The good news is the new management at Penneys is starting to turn things around. I believe sales were up four percent recently over last year. If sales keep improving then some of the closed stores may reopen at some point. Very often the stores that close are those that have leases expiring and rather than commit to a new lease, it's often smarter to close the store. If a chain shows a willingness to close stores rather than take out a new lease, it tends to give that chain a better stance in negotiating a new lease at other sites.

The big key is not to close too many stores. The more stores you have the more stock you can buy and the lower price per item you can negotiate. If you're buying a half million toasters for your stores you'll get a better price per toaster than a small store that only buys three. The more stores you have, the more stock you can buy, and the lower price you'll pay per item which can either lead to higher profits, or lower consumer prices giving the company more market share.

That's such a shame. We shopped there all the time in the 70's and 80's. It's sad to think of so many people that will be out of work. We have a JCP in our mall; however, my dh and I prefer shopping on-line. I went to Kohl's today to return a shirt I had gotten for my dh for Christmas and decided I would buy myself something since I rarely go shopping "in store". There was so much stuff, it was overwhelming, and I walked out empty handed. Oh, well.

There are 2 Penney stores fairly close to me. I normally shop at the one most spacious. I can't stand a store that has everything crowded together. I'm sorry for any closing, though because that means jobs lost.

I always skip JC Penny. It's like Macys. Just a big store I have to go through for a short cut out to stores like Nordstrom. I never even stop to look at anything. I'm shocked not one of our stores was on the list. I think the last time I ever shopped at JC Penny was when I was teenaged mall rat.

The Penneys that was closest to us already had closed before this. Admittedly I didn't shop there like I did back in the day. (Only due to distance from where I live now). I remember the Penney and Sears catalogues being delivered each year at Christmas. How times change. Its sad so many will lose their jobs!

Our store closed last year and wouldn't be surprised if the other anchor stores (Sears, Macy's & Dillard's) aren't far behind! Any time or day you can go there and the stores are basically empty!

I was a huge Penneys shopper back in the day, but from the time they started their "new plan" about what, 4-5years ago? they lost me. First they stopped selling 95% of what I used to buy. Then after they announced a year or two ago they were "going back" to the Old Penneys I gave them another try. Still nothing I wanted. I have been looking at their "sale" merchandise today, and what I see without exception is prices double what they should be that were "reduced", and are still higher than the prices at Kohl's for very similar merchandise. The stores near me are not closing, but as of now at least, they don't have anything I want. Sad.

I never shop there, I find their merchandise boring and cheap; nothing great. I love Target, not a shopping snob, I am an equal shopper! .

I feel badly for those who are losing their jobs. My mother used to shop at Penneys for us. I loved looking at their catalog when younger. I don't really shop there now though I do like their sales clerks when I am in the store. I look on occasion, but I very rarely buy. I'm surprised ours are not closing. I didn't think they did too well.
