Coffee mugs (stainless) are dishwasher safe? Truly?

I saw a mug that Jayne Brown was using this morning on the Q. It was cute, so I looked to see if the Q sold it. This is what I found instead:

I mean the cracks and the seams... will they hold up? DH now uses a Starbucks-type travel mug and it gets gross inside. I am looking for a stainless dishwasher-safe replacement, if there is such a thing. Perhaps I should have asked that instead. Thanks, happyhousewife

They look pretty seamless so I'd say yes. I don't usually put anything that is doublewall in the dishwasher tho.

We have a few SS travel coffee mugs that we use all the time (a few are the Contigo brand). I *think* these are truly SS. And we put them in the top rack of the d/w no problem.

I have a stainless coffee carafe for my Cuisinart machine. I use a dishwasher pod in boiling water. Warm the water in the microwave and pour in pot, drop in 1 pod like Cascade or whatever you use, replace lid, let sit and wala, beautiful, shining, like new pot in about an hour. I'm sure this would work on travel mugs as well.

My husband has been using a SS travel coffee mug for many years, probably 10-12.. It goes into the dishwasher everyday and is fine, no leaking or water damage to the SS.

It used to have a printed logo on the front of it, but that has long ago been washed away. There used to be a rubberized pad on the bottom, but that is gone too.

He still won't give up this mug. I have purchased several new ones, but he likes the older one the best.

We put our Contigo SS travel mugs in the dishwasher too. No problems.

I put all our double walled ss mugs in the dishwasher bcz I have no use for namby pamby high maintenence things. Sometimes, though, if the exterior has a color coating, it does eventually flake off. And bcz I use cream in my coffee, the interiors get a little gross, but I found a SIGG cleaning tablet from Amazon that I just pop in. It cleans the inside great then I pop into dishwasher

I make it a point to put as much as possible in the dishwasher and not to purchase things that can't. I also make sure that I've not spent so much on something that if the kids break it, I don't feel horrible about it. Having kids does that to you. I do the same with their clothes and most of our clothes period, except those few special items.

I realize hand washing is the most gentle but being busy can change your view of such things. Put that boy in the dishwasher on the top shelf and don't fret any more about it.

I have a vast collection of SS Starbucks travel mugs and they all say not to put in the dishwasher, so I don't.

I clean mine with Barkeepers Friend or Bon Ami to keep it shiny inside.

OH, don't forget about a good old fashioned baby bottle brush for getting into the nooks if need be! If it says not to put it in the dishwasher, then I wouldn't but I would probably not buy it. I think it is more about the heat loosening the glue that keeps the layers together, which is why I generally put those things on top. I have Contigo and love them!

My first Contigo started leaking through the top after a couple years. My replacements have been doing fine, all have been washed on top shelf dishwasher. With all those nooks and crannies on the inside of the lid, I'll risk losing one every few years to keep using the dishwasher.

Stainless steel IS dishwasher safe, but I still read the instructions for washing when I get a new item.

Contigo insulated stainless mugs are the ones that I've found to be dependable to keep drinks hot for a few hours (more hot that those I buy at the stores). I got a 2-pack for $14.99 With a $5 coupon at Costco - but they're regularly $19.99 per 2-pack there. QVC carries them, also, or they did at one time. There are different sizes, so be careful to get one that works for you, if interested

Below is a pic of a Zojirushi one that I bought recently though OUTDOES Contigo!! I put coffee in mine at 8:00 AM and at 1:30 PM, if I haven't finished it, it's still pretty warm (as I pour it out!)! It's more costly, but I only needed one, so I bought one...(I didn't pay as much as this one is listed for - I paid about $22)

This Oxo set is perfect for cleaning these types of mugs. The bristles are not hard, they are flexible and wash everything very well.

I have a lot of the insulated cold cups with the hard plastic straws that are hard to clean inside the straw. The thin narrow brush is perfect for them.

I agree that if it's just straight up stainless steel, sure - why not.

But if it's double-walled, thermal, insulated type of thing I wouldn't. It takes a few seconds to wash a cup.
