Petco Pulls All Chinese-Made Treats

This is good news. Now if they would only ban all pet food made in China... The only problem is that shelves would be bare, LOL. As someone who lost a beautiful Maine Coon cat to a Nutra dry food recall (too late for my sweet kitty), I am happy that the big stores are beginning to take a stand.

LOS ANGELES Petco said Monday it has removed all remaining Chinese-made dog and cat treats from its website and stores nationwide because of concerns they have sickened thousands of pets and killed 1,000 dogs in the U.S. since 2007.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says initial tests have not connected the Chinese jerky and rawhide treats to the illnesses, but the San Diego-based company and its rival PetSmart vowed in May to ban the snacks.

Petco is the first national pet retailer to pull the treats from its 1,300 stores. Phoenix-based PetSmart Inc. said Monday that it plans to have them off shelves at its roughly 1,300 stores by March.

The FDA targeted the treats after receiving more than 4,800 complaints of pet illnesses, including the deaths, after pets ate chicken, duck or sweet potato jerky treats from China. Tests have not confirmed any connection, but the agency is still investigating.

Petco Vice President John Sturm said all treats are now made in the U.S. or places such as the Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia and South America. The company risked tens of millions of dollars by changing treat vendors, he said.

I love Costco, but man what took them so long? The only food they sell that I feed to my pets is in their meat dept.

This is great. But how can we be sure that companies in the U.S. are not using ingredients from China?

I'm so sorry about your kitty..I have been involved with the dog advisor..I make sure NONE of my baby's food's from China!! Why does the US still ship food from China for our pets?? I make sure to only buy USA products for Emmy. Also try and get organic and grain free food, she does better w/o grains!

WHY? The companies reduce their costs here and make 'big' profits for their stockholders.

I am just now getting some information from what thr fda put out in 2011, which I can come back and read from papers later today -afternoon. The print is so small I have to enlarge the print out in order to read it correctly. (Nestle Purina).

I did try ----multi times over one year ago---- about the brand names for dogs but not the cat foods (unable). Withou losing this information, I can as I knew before posted over two years ago the very same ones as today. Waggin Train Jerky treats........Canyon Creek Ranch. (Nestle Purina).

Well it certainly is about time and long overdue.

Many fur babies have unfortunately and sadly died.

It would be great if all made in China and all other overseas imported into U.S.A. foods were pulled off market, and future items remained in their own countries.

So many imported foods raised and produced in China, Vietnam, Thailand, and other countries, are not labeled at all. That also pertains to seafood, meats, poultry, and produce, and of course so much more.

That does not give the consumer much needed information, in order to make a wise food purchase and healthy choice.

I have no faith in the FDA at all anymore, and why have they still remained silent after so many Chinese imported foods killed our beloved USA pets?

The answer is quite simple and it is because money talks, and the FDA has forgotten about protecting the consumer and their pets. Big business is their largest supporters.
