A lower wage in a lower cost state will buy you the same standard of living as those in a higher cost/higher minimum wage state, so in some cases it's a wash. In fact, wages often vary by region according to the local cost of living.

With a child, one would be eligible for Section 8, Medicaid, food stamps, utility/fuel subsidies, free cell phone, free school lunches, and maybe more. Therefore, their standard of living is far higher than what their take-home pay can buy.

We need more good jobs, not a higher minimum wage. I wish they'd stop sending jobs out of the country and importing foreign labor. That alone would make wages go up, and we'd keep some of the better jobs. The business lobby, sadly, LOVES cheap labor.

I skimmed an article this week . . . that perhaps Robotics and their growing and more widespread use in manufacturing could help bring back some jobs to the USA.

With robotics, it doesn't matter IF an item is produced here or China or Thailand or Brazil . . . as labor costs remain the same with them . . . BUT it does make a difference on the transportation cost of said finished goods and perhaps to an extent the raw materials but those are probably made overseas right now too.

With robotics, IF they returned to our shores . . . we'd need new facilities, very modern facilities to boot . . . that would need to be built creating construction jobs . . . and you need to train hire people who can program and repair said robotics . . . and you'd need support staff, payroll clerks, and many other support positions.

While robotics would replace traditional employees on the assembly line . . . with them being overseas right now . . . any increase over here would be a welcomed increase.

At my son's high school . . . this year is the first year for the Robotics Academy within the Engineering Academy and they're also doing a Business, Medical (EMT, etc.) and seems like a Culinary . . . so while some students that might be as far as they go . . . that is also a good start . . . and for those that continue on to a higher education, perhaps a few years with studies in the various academies might save a few from major changes in their second or third year of study and thus having to take more hours in their new major . . . all of which cost money . . . and give them a better chance at selecting the right major from the start.

But like I said . . . I skimmed the article but it is an interesting subject that hopefully more mfg. will return and take place in the USA.

I'm thinking that a person can live a lot better (quality-wise) in a lower cost of living area than a very high cost of living area, which requires the very highest of wages possible for so-so living quarters, (unless a few generations are pitching into a household's earnings, which I see around here. Grandparents included.)

A good idea re: servers/bar tenders/valets is to be kind, be genuine, and position themselves in high-end establishments. That's what I would do, anyway.

I know of a few college students (way back when) who actually bought and rented out houses just by working in restaurants, even as bus boys. It can be very lucrative, especially when the establishment is high quality (five star, etc.).

(Mine is not one of them yet, perhaps it will be soon as we replaced our Governor).

I think servers should be making way more than 2 something an hour. Its PATHETIC what they still earn since the what? 1960s?

I was a server and bartender throughout much of the 90's to supplement my income. I never came home with less than $12 an hour.

My daughter was a server while in school from 2008-2012 and she was closer to $16-$17 and hour, and more when she got into a nicer restaurant. I don't know any server who makes less than $10/hr.

My daughter is a manager in a corporate owned chain and it's their policy to pay a server state minimum if they don't make it with their tips, but if it's an ongoing occurrence they will be let go.
