Who eats pork and kraut today?

I know its traditionally local in PA. Who else has pork and kraut today? I love it slapped on mashed potatoes! Yum! Ours is cooking as I type this. It was my Moms favorite meal. (God rest her soul).

I like sauerkraut with some things. No pork though. We don't eat pork. The holidays bring out so many traditions from so many places. Enjoy yours.

Interesting. I never heard about pork and kraut for New Years. I've always heard about hopping john. A lot of ladies on the New Years Day Meal thread mentioned having pork and kraut today.

we eat brat and kraut.....old tradition from my grandmother.....well I eat the kraut but not the brat.........you eat kraut for good fortune, wealth.......................................raven

Our pork and sauerkraut is baking in the oven. I have had this meal for 70 some years now on New Years Day. My cousin bless her soul would be here dinner on New Years day and she told everyone here that when she was growing up her family said you eat pork on this day and not chicken. Reason being a pig always makes his feet go forward and a chicken always pushes his feet back wards so you want to be going forward. We do ours with a apple in the roasting pan, onions, a little beer, some brown sugar, garlic, salt and pepper let it bake for hours. When it is just about done throw in a few hot dogs and some kobassi and every one wants mashed potatoes served with this. Yes later on everyone will be here for their New Year Day dinner. Your right Raven I forgot about the wealth and good fortune part. Also have to have applesauce with this.

Right now there is kielbasi and kraut cooking in the crockpot and later i will put a rosemary seasoned pork roast in the oven. Mashed potatoes , rye bread and applesauce round out the menu.

we eat it at thanksgiving, but not for new years.....part of our german heritage.

We had a Hormel pork roast for lunch and sauerkraut and cabbage. I just finished burning our bayberry candle.

Interesting, thanks for the comments. I never did it like Cater but I do know of people who put apple with it. And I like kielbasa but haven't had it for ages.

we always keep our pork and sauerkraut simple. usually country spare ribs or a pork butt because it has so much flavor....seared a bit on all sides with some salt and a little pepper. it then goes into the slow cooker with some sauerkraut for hours....low and slow. the only seasoning we use is lots of freshly ground black pepper. we serve it with a side of buttery mashed potatoes.

my grandmother never served pork without apple or applesauce somewhere in the recipe..........don't know why..........even pork chops were served with applesauce.............................raven

We prefer in wine sauce with onions, but it's still a bit too cloying for me, so I rinse it off. Also good on a bagel with cream cheese.

we never serve it with apples or applesauce. is your grandmother german BBR? maybe its the germans that DONT put apples in them.....never had it with apples before.

my grandfather always ate either pickled herring or herring in sour cream at midnight......i could NEVER get into that.

We have to eat a little bit of herring too, its tradition, but we all hate it!! Have the pork chops, sauerkraut, and kielbasi in the crock pot cooking!!!

We eat a traditional black eyed peas & ham dinner down south. I opted to go with pork and applesauce for a change of pace.
