MrsSweetieBear, several of us on this board recommended "THE ROSIE PROJECT". It was very cute and they are going to make a movie of it. I also read the new sequel, "THE ROSIE EFFECT" and it was okay, but not nearly as good as the first book, IMO. Thanks to BORN TO SHOP's recommendation, I read "THE GIRL WITH A CLOCK FOR A HEART" by Peter Swanson, and it was very exciting and suspenseful. I would have liked a stronger ending, but 99% of it was great. I also read the new Flavia book by Alan Bradley, "AS CHIMNEY SWEEPS, COME TO DUST". I thought the beginning and end were good, but it dragged a bit in the middle. I just read the book that the PBS Grantchester series is based upon, "SIDNEY CHAMBERS AND THE SHADOW OF DEATH" by James Runcie, and thought it was good. So far, it looks like the tv series is faithful to the book. I am also reading the Constable Evans cozy mystery series by Rhys Bowen, which begins with "EVANS ABOVE." They remind me very much of the Hamish MacBeth series by M. C. Beaton, as he too is a policeman in a quirky village.

Happy New YEar Lainey. Can't believe 2014 is history already. Wasn't the best year for books in my opinion. Hope there are more that grab my interest in 2015.

Started Everything I never told you by Celeste Ng for my book club. Not the most uplifting way to start the year, but I think it will be thought provoking.

Thank you, lainey, for starting us once again in the new year. I can't believe it's 2015.

I just finished The Handsome Man's Deluxe Cafe by Alexander McCall Smith, a perfect book to read for the holidays. I thought it was one of the better books in the series.

I'm about 100 pages into A Tale For The Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. I'm not always a fan of books that alternate points of view, but the writing in this book is exceptional. I'm intrigued to see where it goes.

Carrying this over from Dec Reading Thread in case some missed it with all the holiday activities. Thanks to Lolakimono for the recommendation... LM

Lola, THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN looks good. Here is the storyline...

A debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost. And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good? A compulsively readable, emotionally immersive, Hitchcockian thriller that draws comparisons to Gone Girl, The Silent Wife, or Before I Go to Sleep, this is an electrifying debut embraced by readers across markets and categories.

Hi everyone and a Happy and Healthy 2015!

I'm still reading Five Days Left, by Julie Lawson Timmer. It's good and I'm enjoying it, but I've got so many other books that are calling me, I'm finding it hard to concentrate. Isn't that crazy?

I read 60 books in 2014. My goal was 75, so I didn't really come close. I lowered my goal this year to 60, and we'll see what happens. I may just forget the goal and just read to enjoy. Goals were never my thing anyway!

The Girl on the Train sounds really good. I just reserved it from my library in Kindle form.

Wishing you all to read many wonderful books in 2015.

Former piano prodigy Nastya Kashnikov wants two things: to get through high school without anyone learning about her past and to make the boy who took everything from her—her identity, her spirit, her will to live—pay.

Josh Bennett’s story is no secret: every person he loves has been taken from his life until, at seventeen years old, there is no one left. Now all he wants is be left alone and people allow it because when your name is synonymous with death, everyone tends to give you your space.

Everyone except Nastya, the mysterious new girl at school who starts showing up and won’t go away until she’s insinuated herself into every aspect of his life. But the more he gets to know her, the more of an enigma she becomes. As their relationship intensifies and the unanswered questions begin to pile up, he starts to wonder if he will ever learn the secrets she’s been hiding—or if he even wants to.

The Sea of Tranquility is a rich, intense, and brilliantly imagined story about a lonely boy, an emotionally fragile girl, and the miracle of second chances.

Just finished Snow Hunters by Paul Yoon. It's a small book, only 196 pages, about a Korean War POW who immigrates to Brazil after he is released to start a new life. Yoon's writing is beautiful, almost poetic, as he describes the character experiencing loneliness and grief, but also kindness and hope from others.

Just finished THE CASE AGAINST WILLIAM by Mark Gimenez. I thought it was a fine book but not outstanding - gave it 3 stars on Goodreads. I am going to try another book by him - see if a different topic makes for a better book. He is known for legal thrillers.

I just finished I AM HAVING SO MUCH FUN HERE WITHOUT YOU. Debut novel by Courtney Maum.

Kind of hard to describe, About a man who has an affair and is trying to win his wife (French lawyer) back. It was a good book and a pleasant light read. Recommended to me by one of the library employees.

Finished Danielle Steel's Pegasus. If you like books about circuses, the war and horses this one's for you. It was a nice change from her usual fluff re women. Sort of sad with all going on in Germany in the 30's but liked the coming of generations in the end.

Onto Delicious by Ruth Reichl. Need something light to read after the heaviness of the above book.

I'm working on this one now.

Set in a rural community steeped in silence and denial, So Much Pretty explores all parents’ greatest fear, that their child will be hurt. But it also examines a second, equally troubling question: What if my child hurts someone else? The disappearance and murder of nineteen-year-old Wendy White is detailed through the eyes of journalist Stacy Flynn and a host of other richly drawn characters, each with their own secrets and convictions. After Wendy’s body is found, Flynn’s intense crusade to expose a killer draws the attention of a precocious local girl, Alice Piper, whose story intertwines with Wendy’s in a spellbinding and unexpected climax.

Today I finished reading Five Days Left, by Julie Lawson Timmer. I enjoyed it so much, and recommend it to all of you. This is a description from Amazon:

Destined to be a book club favorite, a heart-wrenching debut about two people who must decide how much they’re willing to sacrifice for love. Mara Nichols is a successful lawyer, devoted wife, and adoptive mother who has received a life-shattering diagnosis. Scott Coffman, a middle school teacher, has been fostering an eight-year-old boy while the boy’s mother serves a jail sentence. In two interrelated stories, Scott and Mara both have five days left until they must say good-bye to the ones they love the most. Through their stories, Julie Lawson Timmer explores the individual limits of human endurance and the power of relationships, and shows that sometimes loving someone means holding on, and sometimes it means letting go.

I'm so glad that my first book of January was a five star!

I'm not sure what book I'm starting tonight. I have quite a choice!

Happy reading everyone
