Just lost my cousin to melanoma on the day after Christmas...so...still a bit upset and thinking of his wife who said yesterday...that it hurt worse then she even imagined. I miss several members of our family and am praying the new year is better.

When I was younger I thought life was about accomplishments, about changes. Now as I grow older I have come to realize life is only about losses.

My least favorite night. I just about count the minutes till its over. I could get really nostalgic, but I try not to "go there". Croemer, my sympathies on the loss of your cousin.

I've always found New Years somewhat sad and bittersweet for the very reasons the OP pointed out. In youth, New Year's Eve is kind of a night of anticipation, not always marked by what is expected to happen, but there is kind of an air of hope. As we grow older and experience more things, it is more a night of farewells, not the least of which is a farewell to the old year along with the remembrance of other farewells. Auld Lang Syne.....old times gone by. It's fun to be with others on this night, but you always have to go home and ponder the past, the present, and the future.

Croemer, sorry to read that your cousin passed away. I know your moving a round with a heavy heart right now. It always seems to hurt more when family members pass away at Christmas. A few years back we started to loose family members right on Christmas or the day before or the day after. It was such a routine for us that when our children and my niece and nephew were flying in for the holidays they made sure they packed really good dress clothes. Thank goodness that has ended for us. Hope your good memories of your cousin comforts you.

Rainy City Girl, no truer words were ever said then what you said on here. You said every thing I have been thinking tonight. When I was younger my biggest fear was if my Mom and Dad would be here next New Years. They have both been gone for many years now I concern my thoughts about family and friends. Yes always. Miss my parents and miss all the dancing I did before I messed up my back. But thankful for my husband, children and grandchildren!

When I think of all I have lost - wonderful parents and grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, my brother who died in Viet Nam and my very dear first husband who just simply left me too soon - I try to tell myself that I was so fortunate to have had them in the first place and that many others do not ever have anyone wonderful in their lives.

I lost one of my sisters on the second day of 2014, so I suppose I should be feeling this way. But I've noticed that as the years go on and life is always changing, it's become just another night.

I miss my parents. My father died last year. 2014 was not a good year for me. I had sibling issues, broke my foot and lost my job. I am looking forward to leaving 2014 behind and looking ahead to a better life in the new year.

I faced my challenges and have found more strength than I ever knew. But, that being said, 2014 made me sad and afraid. I pray that the new year will be one of good moments and new beginnings.

Not sure exactly why but I never really liked New Years Eve.When I was a kid it meant Christmas vacation was about over, now it reminds me how fast the year went by.

I did not feel like that last night, but I am feeling rather melancholy today.

Its certainly not because I will miss 2014, because actually it was not a good year for me and/or my family.

I do ponder about what this new year may bring for me and my family and friends. I pray for good things -- health, happiness and prosperity.

I am feeling rather down as I am sad that the holidays are over. I had a particularly wonderful and beautiful Christmas and holiday season. I so hate for all of it to be over. Now, I also have to think about tackling the un-dressing of the house and putting away all of my special decorations. So much work, but that's not the worst of it. The house looks so bare and now I feel like there's not much to look forward to but a long cold, snowy winter.

I know I am blessed in many ways and I'm not feeling sorry for myself. It just takes me some time to adjust to reality again!

Yes - a beloved cousin died December 30. Our mothers were sisters, and last year her mother, my aunt died at Thanksgiving - she was the last remaining relative from that generation and I now have no more grandparents, parents or aunts and uncles. Her death is the first now hitting my generation.

Thinking of what the year ahead will doubtlessly hold is overwhelming to me. My mother is in very poor health, and I look ahead to difficult days of hospitalization, hospice, her eventual death, and settling her legal affairs. I am just going to take things one day at a time. It is depressing to know on January 1st that it is going to be a hard year! Hope it's a great year for everyone else!
