Would you complain about this?

I have a fairly new neighbor (about three months) whose bedroom backs up to mine. The first few weeks she banged on the wall with a hammer and I assumed she was putting up photos, paintings, etc. Unfortunately, it has never stopped. She bangs on the wall on and off almost all day long and sometimes into the evening hours. If she is still hanging stuff, she must have several hundred of them by now. This morning she started at 7 AM.

I have never been a complainer and in my four+ years here, I've had three or four neighbors in that apartment (counting this new one . . . sadly two of them died and one of them just moved). It went on for almost two hours this morning. Right now it has stopped. When my girls come even they have remarked about the constant hammering.

Now I wonder what the heck she is doing? I don't know whether to approach her or just report it to management. I don't want to get her in trouble, but I'm beginning to think something is wrong with her.

Any suggestions? Should I just put up with it and hope it will stop eventually?

Yes, I'd bring it to her attention. Maybe she has exercise equipment that bangs against the wall.

I would either ask her about it or say something to management. She might not be aware that you can hear whatever she's doing.

Are you in an apartment or condo? I know our Condo Assn. has noise rules and it sounds like this tenant is abusing any if they exist in your building. It would be nice if you two could discuss it and solve the problem, but sometimes you have to engage a third party (management). Good Luck.

I would approach her about it prior to getting management involved. She most likely doesn't realize her movements are that bothersome to you, and would probably appreciate direct feedback and a chance to correct it before being admonished by the management.

Wow, I can honestly say I never thought of some of these things! She does live alone.

It's not that much of a big deal, I may just leave it alone. I hate confrontations and do not want to establish a negative relationship with my next door neighbor.

I'm going to listen more closely the next time it starts, as I never thought it was anything but a hammer. It could be exercise equipment.

Bring some cookies and just say hi and happy holidays! Then ask if maybe her exercise equipment could be moved a bit as it seems to bang on your bedroom wall. That way she doesn't have to explain, but you have let her know you are hearing the noise.

Hmm that would be annoying but I doubt Id say anything unless it goes on longer. Then I would just say are you remodeling? Something nice, not in an attacking sort of way.

We have neighbors that are annoying (cig butts thrown in our yard, fireworks in the field all summer, etc.) I called cops on each incident to no avail. (And my husband said let it go originally but IMO hes too laid back so I called). Well he was right because they still do things, now probably on purpose. Some people are just jerks! (We are not connected to these neighbors though). And I might add these homes are in the country and middle to upper class. People act like jerks in ALL classes of people!

Simply solve the mystery. Politely introduce yourself as a neighbor and ask her about the banging. She may not know she is doing this and that you are being bothered. It does not mean, or has to be, a confrontation. You are simply establishing a relationship with someone new. Stop speculating, get the facts, meet someone new and share a moment of friendship. If she bites, bite back!. Really, what have you got to loose and you may gain some peace.

If talking to her doesn't help, there is a sound insulating dry wall ( I believe Lowe's has it) that can be put over your existing dry wall on your shared wall easily and fairly cheaply. Not a bad idea anytime there is a shared wall.

I have a neighbor like this. Luckily it doesn't happen at night. I wonder what she is doing too. I would pay to see what the h She is doing over there lol.

I would approach her and say ""Do you hear some sort of banging going on?"" Explain what you are hearing and see if she is hearing the same thing. It could be possible it is not her but maybe something else. If it is her she will be aware she is bothering other people.
