Wishing all who purchased them everywhere good luck and no health problems. Allrecipes.com has caramel apples, candied apples recipes. Very easy and fast preparation. p.s. I wouldn't use craft sticks or craft popsicle sticks because they might not be food quality, etc. Maybe barbeque skewer sticks? Or plastic forks (or stainless steel?) inserted just to be able to dip the apples into the candy and/or caramel coating.

I finally received my apples. Had ordered them before I learned about all the people getting sick after eating caramel apples. Did anyone consume the ones they got without getting sick? I'm not sure what to do. Thinking of sending them back. Hate to do that because I really love them.

From what I saw last night on the news only one brand is responsible.... here is an excerpt from CNN.

On Wednesday, the Happy Apple Company of Washington, Missouri, issued a voluntary recall of Happy Apple Brand caramel apples with a best use by date between August 25 and November 23, 2014. The apples have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

http://www.cnn.com/2014/12/19/health/caramel-apple-listeria/index.html

However this is what the FDA has to say:

The Food and Drug Administration is continuing to advise consumers not to eat prepacked, commercially produced whole caramel apples.

The recalled Happy Apple caramel apples were sold in single pack, three packs, four packs and eight packs with a best use by date between Aug. 25 and Nov. 23. They were available for retail sale through grocery, discount and club stores in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin.

Happy Apple said the recalled caramel apples were no longer available in stores.

The grocery chain Safeway pulled prepackaged caramel apples from its shelves after the family of an 81-year-old woman who died of listeria filed suit Monday. She had bought several caramel apples from a Safeway supermarket in Felton, California, in October, the suit claimed.

The FDA says five deaths have been reported, with listeriosis contributing to three of the deaths. It is unclear whether it contributed to a fourth, the agency said, while a fifth death was unrelated to listeriosis, the infection caused by the bacteria.

THis is the link to that article.... http://news.yahoo.com/firm-recalls-caramel-apples-amid-listeria-fears-035137343.html;_ylt=A0LEVrylsp5U4sQAxU8PxQt.

For me, I would probably go ahead and eat them though. The chances are so slim but you should do what you feel is best. I would call up QVC and see what they have to say.

I received 2 as gifts & ate the both- they were delicious! I was a little concerned but I know they're made fresh daily. Who knows how old the ones you buy elsewhere are... A coworker bought some caramel apples in October from a supermarket. They weren't Mrs. Prindables & when they unwrapped them there were fruit flies in them! I think these are the ones to worry about.

Thanks for the updated information, Irish Girl! I hope this closes this case. Yeah, a lot of it has already been said but some people, I guess, chose to not believe what they were hearing. I guess it is understandable, since Listeria is horrible. But most of the facts have been out there.

I feel badly for QVC and Mrs P (even though I'm not a Mrs P customer), because they really took a heavy hit. I wonder how many people insisted that they get their money back and still used the product since it was pretty clear, all along, that this line was exempt from the recall.

Slightly off topic, and in general: I always buy local, fresh. A year or so ago, I ordered a food item (not QVC, etc.), and the entire box was permeated with a strong chemical/perfume odor. I had to store the unopened box out on my porch, and even then, the odor permeated into my entry way/foyer. They must spray the delivery trucks and/or storage warehouses used in transit. It was a holiday weekend, so who knows where it was temporarily stored. The tracking stated it was delivered somewhere in the South until pick-up for the remainder of the transit, etc. I wouldn't order anything edible on a four day weekend. They hire private delivery contractors, I'm thinking.........don't know for sure, though. No more food orders from me, especially when there is a holiday weekend during transit. JMO. We have tons of local candy shops/bakeries/etc., which makes a big difference, though, re: my opinion.

The CDC hasn't declared ANY BRAND safe yet. The one company voluntarily recalled their apples. Other companies like Mrs. Prindables didn't. QVC and Prindables statement doesn't say they're ""safe"" just not on the list so far of tainted bad apples. Big difference. There's no ""safe list"" yet. Read the threads in the Kitchen forums.

I received my shipment of 16 apples on Dec. 10th, and we ate the last apple on Christmas Eve. My family was aware of the Listeria issue, but we had no worries or concerns about our Mrs Prindables shipment. We do not live in a state where any cases of Listeria have been reported, we have never eaten the store bought apples that were at the center of this investigation, and the statement that Mrs Prindables were not affected, was reassurance enough for all of us to eat the apples. We based our decision on the facts we knew, and have no regrets.

(CDC recommends that U.S. consumers not eat any commercially produced, prepackaged caramel apples, including plain caramel apples as well as those containing nuts, sprinkles, chocolate, or other toppings, until more specific guidance can be provided.) Commercially-produced and pre-packaged apples—the kind typically sold at grocery stores—have been linked to listeria monocytogenes infections, also called listeriosis.

According to the FDA, “Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.” When the organism infects pregnant women, it can also lead to miscarriages and stillborn births. The bacteria can be spread by ingesting affected food, making contact with infected animals and is also passed from mother to child during pregnancy.

As of December 22, the CDC has found 29 infected people across ten states, all of whom have been hospitalized. Of those 29, three have died due to causes linked directly to listeriosis; the CDC believes infection may have contributed to the death of the fourth.

It remains unclear which brands have been affected and the CDC is still working to determine the contamination source. It is also not yet clear whether it is the caramel coating or the apples that are causing the outbreak, but, according to the CDC, "at this time, no illnesses related to this outbreak have been linked to apples that are not caramel-coated and not prepackaged or to caramel candy.”

Some caramel apple manufacturers, such as Missouri-based Happy Apple Company, are issuing voluntary recalls as the CDC continues their investigation. “We recently received notice from Bidart Brothers, one of our apple suppliers to our California facility that there may be a connection between this outbreak and the apples that they supplied to that facility,” the company said in a statement.

Simultaneously, two other cases of the infection, both in Washington state, were linked to frozen desserts produced by Snoqualmie Gourmet Ice Cream. Both patients are currently recovering from the disease and remain hospitalized. Meanwhile, the company issued a voluntary recall on ice cream, gelato, custard and sorbet of all flavors. The products were distributed in fourteen states. It is unclear whether the ice cream-related infections are in any way connected to the caramel apple-related infections.

Slightly off topic: I recall years ago my mom and sisters making candied apples. So a couple of years ago, I used an easy recipe and made my own! I'm thinking that caramel apples would be fairly easy, as well as my occasional old-fashioned baked apples. It's worth a try.

I will call QVC back and make a decision.

ps.....called QVC and they assured me the apples are 100% ok to eat.

So ignore the CDC and go with QVC??? OK, maybe they should call the CDC and tell them that they "know for sure" that their caramel apples are OK. Actually, on Mrs. Prindable's website the company's press release says:

"We want to reassure our customers that we have no reason to believe that Mrs. Prindable’s products are not safe."

To me, that's not the same as saying they are "100% safe to eat."

My SIL contracted listeria while she was pregnant and lost her baby. They think it was from brie cheese she had on a deli sandwich.

Until they're declared absolutely safe, I wouldn't eat them.

I heard it wasn't the caramel, that it was possibly the apples.
