Just because you can do it

Doesn't mean you should do it. What is a good example of that today. I'm thinking of the new movie The Interview which is causing a lot of uproar even before they can premier it. Does this saying apply here? Do you know of any other instances where this applies?

Obviously, I haven't seen The Interview, but I've never found Seth Rogen to be funny...Maybe if I were a 13-year-old boy?? I did see his interview with Stephen Colbert, and he really did seem like an awkward adolescent with the most annoying laugh.

So...My point is: Why in the world would anyone, least of all North Korea, take him seriously? Okay, probably because Kim Jong Un has the brain of a 13-year-old adolescent boy (with my sincere apologies to all teenage boys).

Despite all that, I don't believe in censorship, and I hate to see anyone kowtow to North Korea. However, in the interest of public safety, maybe filmmakers should think twice about what they put out there. This mess is sure costing them a bundle.

My personal opinion is that Sony should never have made the movie in the first place. All countries don't believe in free speech. Like the OP said, just because Sony could make the movie doesn't mean they should have.

Besides, from the trailers I saw it wasn't that funny.

That being said, I don't think it should have censored. Let the people vote with their money.

I work in mental health and often tell my patients ""just because you CAN say something doesn't mean you should..."" cause they can be brutal to each other at times..

I think this applies to all of us..sure we CAN say what we want..but should we...and why?

It's my opinion also, that they should never have made the movie in the first place. Actually, what I said to my husband yesterday was "who in their right mind thought THIS was a good idea???!!!! To be honest, I don't care what country it is. Make a movie, a comedy no less, about this subject matter? I think it was in very, very poor taste. Again, I don't care what country it's about. I don't care if the country has free speech or not, I just think it was in really poor taste.

I, too, think this is important. I think so-called "brutal honesty" also falls into that category, with some people relishing the brutality far more than the "honesty."

You just honestly don't get it, do you? What you're saying is because they don't have free speech, we shouldn't allow OUR free speech. That's sick.

I don't think that saying applies in the case of The Interview movie. Frankly I am shocked that Sony pulled the movie and now it won't be released, all because of terrorist threats. We are a democracy with freedoms, this isn't N. Korea, we have freedom of speech even if others around the world don't like it. I understand Sony not wanting to feel responsibility in the event any terrorist attacks were actually committed and there were people injured or killed, but where does it end? So now the US will cave if we are threatened? We're a global power, we will always be the target of terrorism both domestic and abroad. Basically we are telling other countries they can dictate how we live. If we produce something that offends, just threaten us and we'll give in. I feel bad for the actors in the movie that won't have their work seen in theaters. Yes it will probably go to DVD and cable, but not the same thing. Movies are produced and released all the time that are controversial or have content in poor taste. Not everything is for everyone, but we are a country founded on the right to choose, not have our freedoms smothered. JMO

This is not the first movie to be made about a dictator. Nor will it be the last. Why is it people are forgetting that and getting all worked up over it? But other movies that are worse as far as insulting a leader and not a word. Well I see we have our cause for the day..

I think it's awful they had to cancel the release of the movie but I think it was canceled not because the hackers would do something but because some kook would do something like that guy who killed all those people in that movie theatre.

I so agree with this. With things going on in the world today such as they are, why bait a country, especially North Korea? Really? Not even a documentary, but a comedy. I feel for the innocent people who got caught up in the aftermath of this ridiculous idea. Free speech, yes, but just because you can, doesn't mean you should is exactly the point. Are there no boundaries in Hollywood? We are in a dangerous time now with internet and social media bullying and what have you. You're just asking for trouble with things like this.

Now the movie theaters are in a lousy position to have to make this decision to pull this movie and give the hackers what they wanted. To me, their hands were tied, but now look? Who knows what will happen to any other movies or shows will be threatened? Thank you Sony. Great work.
