I have the Royal Doulton Lady Carlyle pattern of china. I am thinking of mixing it with some crystal serving pieces. I feel that it would be less costly to by some crystal serving pieces rather than all Royal Doulton. What do you think?

My mother and grandmother had beautiful crystal, but when I started our house I wanted something more up-to-date for the time, which did not include crystal. Now I realize how beautiful crystal is, and that it can mix in with most ways I set the table, including with Polish stoneware.

I hesitate to use the antique crystal I inherited, although I will at times, so I've bought pieces from Mikasa... and another brand I can't think of at the moment. I got a few pieces last year from Macy's that have a deep red band as an edging, for Christmas, I love that.

I love Southern Living magazine, check out their recent holiday issues, they always feature beautifully set tables which include fine china and crystal.

Have fun!

I think that crystal is timeless and classic, and it goes with everything. You don't have to worry about (if or when) changing the dinnerware patterns over the years or the seasons, and then having to purchase and store all the serving or accessory pieces to each pattern, when the crystal will work with them all.

I also think the crystal can be used with less formal table settings as well, so you could have the same serving pieces for other styles of dishes that you use for other occasions as well.

Others might not agree with this, but I think you can buy less expensive crystal (even though the expensive stuff is very beautiful and a discerning eye can tell the difference) and get away with it, as it looks very nice and expensive. You can spend more money on a better china if you like it, and save some money with a less expensive crystal.

There was a time I saved our china, crystal and silverware for special occasions. Then I realized our DIL wasn't really interested in inheriting it. I now use it as much as possible. Funny thing is, now that I am not nearly as careful as I once was, I never break anything. (and if I do, who cares)

I love crystal. Our every day water glasses are an assortment of beautiful crystal from places like Marshall's, TJMaxx, BB&B and fine department stores.

I always check out the clearance section and sometimes find one or two lone glasses. I have about a dozen and each one is different and unique.

The crystal I have in my china cabinet is over 35 years old. A local bank would give one goblet for each $50 deposit way back when. NICE crystal.

My sisters, mother, grandparents all collected a nice amount for me. I was young when I first rec'd it and would drink Pepsi from it. ugh.

That glassware and the paper thin martini glasses are just on display now.
