Rolling Stone apologizes for running story on alleged r*** at UVA fraternity

See this is what happens when a story comes out and everyone jumps on the Guilty! Guilty! Bandwagon before anything has been proven. Rolling Stone magazine now says that there are multiple discrepancies in the story from the alleged victim and they now are doubting the truth of her story. just like the Duke University Lacrosse team story of a few years ago which turned out to be false after those young men had their lives ruined. When will we stop believing allegations like this until there is proof????

The Duke incident was a criminal case. The RS article was just that, an article containing accusations. Two very different things.

The worst part of all of this stuff, from the beginning of time (so to speak), is that some people make untrue accusations. That causes less credibility to be put into true accusations. That's the OTHER tragedy about this sort of crime.

Yes charges were brought in the Duke cas but the case never went to,trial and the charges were dropped when the story the woman told turned out to be proven false. however those young men had their lives turned upside down with all the negative publicity from those who were very willing to find them guilty before anyone ever set foot in a court of law. The UVA story was headed down the same path.

The 24/7 news machine is a blessing and a curse. True stories and false stories get far more coverage than in pre-cable-tv years. All we can hope for is responsible journalism and a scrupulous and fair justice system (neither of which is always an abundant commodity these days).

ITA with you CB. This is what bothers me most is that it really affects people who ARE telling the truth. While the girl from the Duke Lacrosse case is already in jail for murdering her boyfriend I hope she would have been prosecuted and spent time in jail for false accusations.

To this day this is why I cannot stand Nancy Grace. She skewered those boys for months and when it turned out to be a lie, she just moved on to the next story without even an apology.

But you have to be able to PROVE that your accusations are true. Since when can anyone point fingers and say anything they want about anyone, make accusations, ruin someone's reputation and have millions of people falling in line behind them like sheep. It is so scary.

Definitely.

I like Rolling Stone, but it looks like this was just some sloppy reporting. I don't think I've seen the story yet. Is it in the most current issue? I just got one today but I think I have another one and half issues I haven't finished yet, before this one.
