What Are You Reading --- December 2014

This book thread is started on the first of each month.

Some suggestions for posting here:

~ underline, bold or CAPITALIZE the name of the book you're reading - it makes it easier for us readers to see what it is

~ include the author of the book - there are so many books with the same title (if you are recommending a book we want to make sure we read the right one!)

~ post a few words about the book - would you recommend it or not

~ tell us the book genre - is it mystery, romance, historical, biography, etc.

***There is no obligation to do any of the above.

Well, here it is, the last month of the year. I can't believe it.

I hate to admit it, but the book I wanted to start reading last month, Catch Me by Lisa Gardner, I never even opened it the entire month! Just too much going on. Hopefully once the holidays are over I'll find time for me!

Now reading, The Seventh Woman-a Paris homicide novel. Mystery of the year award, etc. Scary, grizzly murders. Takes place in Paris. I'm still reading. I like how fast it goes, too.

The Stranger by Chuck Todd. More fair than I thought.

Tina Fey's Bossy Pants. The second is the fun part.

Now I am starting Mary Higgins Clark's Cinderella.

I am reading Julian Fellowes's "Snobs." He's the man that created and writes Downton Abbey. He wrote it before Downton Abbey. It focuses on the upstairs side, about a woman who marries for a title and money. It's a quick read and a lot of fun.

Finished today a debut novel (new release) by Mary Kubica, The Good Girl. I so enjoyed this first book and cannot wait until she writes more.

I have now started The Ship of Brides, JoJo Moyes. Only a about 100 pages read so far but it is really good.

Just finished reading The Vacationers by Emma Straub. This book is about a group of 7 people (mostly family) that go on a two week vacation to Mallorca, Spain. Really, it's about relationships as everyone has a problem in theirs. Despite it getting a nod from the NYT Book Review, the book was just okay. I was hoping for more of life in Mallorca (there wasn't much described) and less about self-absorbed people (essentially the crux of the book). I'm glad I checked it out from the library and didn't spend money on it. It wasn't a total waste of time, but it wasn't the best book I've read all year, either. I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars.

I have read both THE GOOD GIRL and THE VACATIONERS and enjoyed them both very much. I just finished THE LAST CHILD - an excellent mystery about a missing child - recommended to me by RINGER - thanks!,,,,

Hi lori. I kind of remember you saying you had read a lot of gruesome murder mysteries but the Silkworm topped them all for horrible deaths. This book comes close! I don't know why I like serial killer books, and certainly not all of them, but this one is good so far. And the Paris backdrop doesn't hurt at all Good to see you. Have you quit watching DAYS or just taking a hiatus? Not watching (felt I didn't know anybody anymore) has freed up my time a great deal. I don't miss it. My social calendar is just full now that I'm free. (you know I'm kidding.) Stay in touch and stay away from the paint person

Our book club just started The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration ~ by Pulitzer prize winner Isabel Wilkerson. It tells the story of black migration from the South during the 20th Century.

I'm also reading one of my favorite author's latest: W is for Wasted by Sue Grafton.

And I just purchased two Cyber Monday deals: John Sandford's Deadline; and Gray Mountain by John Grisham.

5 day week-end over Thanksgiving and I read six books. One of which was Susan Mallery's The Christmas Wedding Ring. All her books are so good.

Jud, I said I don't ever read gruesome murder mysteries. Occasionally true crime but not books with violence and serial killers -- that's mom's turf. I do buy her books for her, maybe that's the mixup. She's never met a fictional serial killer she doesn't like. And I don't like any and was grossed out by The Silkworm but I just love JK's writing, and Cormorant and Robin. I know some people said there wasn't enough Robin in this book but I think she's setting it up for the next one. Tried to find out when that one is coming out but couldn't. JK says there will be nine Cormorant Strike novels. Yay!

I am LOVING the Julian Fellowes's book, Snobs. Almost done. I bought it as a double from bookdepository.com which is in Great Britain, owned by Amazon, free shipping. The other novel is called Past Imperfect. I'm jazzed because I'll be sorry to finish Snobs later but then there's a whole other novel of his I can start! You can see outlines of some Downton characters and situations. And then Downton will be back, yay.

O/T: I do not watch anymore DAYS unless I'm on the computer and I put it on as background. I don't care about almost anyone. They have ruined it. It can't be fixed with them five-six months ahead. But I miss you and Snow and OT (and Twin has been MIA lately). Wish you'd drop by the thread we have, let people know what you're up to. The heaviness that was there isn't there so much anymore, now that we know what we know, it's fun chatter and pitter patter. Do read. And of course talk about the wonderful Squatty Potty.

I didn't mean that you enjoyed books with grizzly, macabre stuff, lori, just that this one is worse. Which it is.

I've always known about the perfect potty position, hahahaha, but didn't know lori grenier had gotten on that bandwagon, too. I love it. Steal an invention that you can make millions on, then put your name on as inventor. Just don't get that. Got one for my DD but what to my wandering eyes should appear after I waited and waited, DD holding it all this time, (just kidding), that it was an advanced order and won't come in till almost the night before Christmas-how'd you get yours already ?

Darned if three of my holds didn't come into the library at once. Luckily they are all renewable-should never have ordered them when times are so busy. Will report back here if anything's any good but wait-I think all the suggestions came from here~

I have recently read my third novel about a Chinese-American PI named Keye Street. The character was let go as a profiler due to her alcoholism. Somehow she always finds herself in the midst of a big case in Atlanta working with her police detective boyfriend. The author is AMANDA KYLE WILLIAMS.

I finished GRAY MOUNTAIN by Grisham -- predictable story for that author.

Next up is the Jane Smiley novel SOME LUCK -- a family saga -- and THE BURNING ROOM which features Harry Bosch and is written by Michael Connelly.

Jud (sorry to go O/T, readers), I got mine at Amazon. Came earlier than they said. Love it. But I see even Amazon is out of inventory now. The only place that still had it as of last night was Bed Bath & Beyond. And Ebay with outrageous markups. The thing is ingenius. I never knew "the position" hahahaha. Happy booty happy life LOL.

I just found this thread and hope it will stay, I am reading SILKWORM,loving it. Her 1st one THE CUCKOO 'S CALLING, was really good. I have read all of Peter Robinson books, mystery, and a new comer last year Tanya French, she is on her Fourth, good complex physiological novels. Also Debra Crombie is another mystery writer ,read all of hers. Can't leave out M. Connelly and his wonderful Bosh novels, not as thrilled with his lawyer ones.
