YAK Spotting

My hubby is working in rural IL nowadays and the other day, he spotted a camel in a field, beside a barn.

Last week, he spotted 3 YAKS in a field.

My question: how do yaks find their way to Illinois?

We saw on the news last week that wild animals are showing up in cities, only caught the end of the story but I think it was because they're looking for food?

There are many exotic animal farms here in Missouri, camels - zebras - etc. I would imagine the same in Illinois.

Seeing alpacas around here. One of my dogs is scared to death of them and will not walk past their field on the trail.

This came across my FB feed. Zoe is a golden zebra who

lives in Hawaii......The zebra, named Zoe, is real and she indeed has gold coloured stripes and blue eyes. However, the circulating image has been digitally enhanced to increase the intensity of her golden stripes. Zoe lives at the Three Ring Ranch animal sanctuary in Hawaii. She has a condition called amelanosis, which is the cause of her striking appearance.

Alpacas can be mean. They spit and kick and they're very very strong. Your dog has a good instinct I think.

Alpacas can be mean. They spit and kick and they're very very strong. Your dog has a good instinct I think.

Alpacas and llamas are often used as "guard dogs" for livestock. I have friends with sheep and miniature ponies, who have alpacas or llamas to protect the ewes and mares when they have babies. Foxes, coyotes and feral dogs all think twice about messing with those spittin', kickin' beasts.

I've seen elk, moose and bears in the wild. No yaks.

Buffalo heards, llamas and alpacas on farms.

I've never seen a yak here. I have, however, seen highland cattle plenty of times. They do look very similar.

I tried to post photos, but the bizarre QVC censor said "reply not saved, the following words are not allowed" and then the initials of our President. I didn't even use those letters, stupid stupid censor filter thingy

I'll try again with the photos.

The smallish Tacoma Zoo had a yak display, Clover. They were never much fun to watch -- no frisky antics

They don't look like they do much, other than stand around thinking deep bovine thoughts. Bless 'em. I mostly head for the meerkats. They're always up to no good.

I just was reading in _The New Yorker_ that llamas dislike dogs; maybe alpacas do as well.

There was a very frisky walrus that we always watched. He was very...uh...manly.

Okay, I learned a new word tonight. When I googled it, there's a video of Alaskan officers searching for a missing walrus oosik.
