On 11/18/2014 lovesrecess said:
Hamilton Beach makes a single-serve coffeemaker called The Scoop.....no pods.....you use whatever coffee you like. DH loves it and wanted no part of a Keurig. The Scoop has its own filter....no mess....DH keeps his coffee in a L&L so it really is no muss, no fuss. They sell this model at Walmart now I think.....I bought ours at Kohls...it was very inexpensive.

I will second this one. I had a small 4 cup in college, which was cheap and worked, but it wasn't as fast as the Keurig type ones. I have a Keurig and love it, but I use the filters that you can use your own grind with and drink it every day. When It goes, I'll get the scoop, mainly because they did the whole issues with trying to make you use their cups and not a filter you can fill. I have an old Hamilton Beach Brew Station at work that I use all day because I drink more coffee there than at home. I also have an old fashioned stove percolator, an electric percolator and and electric kettle that I use with my Aeropresso for nice strong coffee and lattes. I use each depending upon my mood at night and on the weekends, but the Keurig is used each morning because I'm in a hurry to get out the door. Here is the Aeropress. You can find it on Amazon. You can find videos on youtube, but it only requires hot water from your kettle and makes a great latte with vanilla and cream!

What brand would you give? Any recommendations?

DD wants a coffee maker for Christmas, doesn't know if she wants a Keurig or Verismo etc. I am still making coffee at home with my Mr. Coffee and don't know much about these single serve coffee makers. I have been tempted many times, but, have never purchased.

Also can anyone please tell me why there are so many different models of the Keurigs, and why one would want one of those vs. a Verismo? Or something else?

I think she thinks that if she has her own coffee maker she will spend less money on coffee at the campus Starbucks. But someone told me, the pods are very expensive for the Verismo. Size is also a consideration, and this is just for her so if it could be a smaller unit that would be great too.

Thanks for any information and suggestions. I want her to be happy with her coffee maker.

Not a coffee drinker, but I know that Keurig has a higher than average failure rate. I think my mom is on her third in four years.

I would not buy anything that REQUIRES pods- you need something with the My K Cup type feature, where you can add your own coffee. Otherwise, it's probably not cheaper than going to Starbuck's.

I think it depends on how much coffee she drinks as for what size. kcups and pods are expensive. People pay for the convenience. One with a timer for sure.

I read an article that said those Keurig type coffee makers get mold inside that you can't clean out...yuk! The pods are expensive too & can't be recycled. I would get her a Mr. Coffee @ Bed Bath & Beyond for $20.00. Give her a bag of good New England brand coffee & she'll be good to go. It's easy to operate & keep clean. I love mine.

My suggestion would be the personal Keurig. One cup at a time and it's small.

For home use, we have a 12 cup pot with a carafe. (not a Keurig)

BUT if someone wants a cup later, hot chocolate or tea, my little Personal Keurig is great.

I don't know anything about the Verismo.

I would try to discourage her from a Keurig. Mine stops working at least once a month. I had to call Keurig's customer service the first time and get them to walk me through how to fix the problem. You have to clean the needles with a paperclip to get it unclogged. I'm not sure a student would want to fool with doing that. I've read that the Verisimo does not make good coffee. I used to have a Tassimo and it worked great. It never quit working. I switched to Keurig because they have more variety, but when it finally dies completely I'll go back to a regular coffee maker.

The personal Keurig. The K-cups are more expensive than bags of ground coffee, but easier to use, less mess and a whole lot cheaper than Starbucks and she can get k-cups in the Starbucks flavors and can get them at any grocery store. Verisimo pods are more expensive and harder to find. For a single person, the cost of the k-cups is balanced by the convenience and ease of cleaning.

BTW, I've had a keurig for 3 years, never had a mold problem, run vinegar through it every month or so to descale because we have hard water.

The single Keurig that takes the old K cups. They are widely available and getting cheaper all the time. Any grocery store, coffee shop or convenience store has K cups. This brewer is the most popular. For college kids, they have limited storage space and this would be easy to keep in the dorm room, along with a box of K cups. Another nice thing is she can vary the coffee (decaf, regular, flavored) by her mood and not have to keep bags of coffee around.

I have three Keurigs -- my original which I bought 7 years ago (still going strong and currently in a small office used by four people on a daily basis), a Vue, and the 2.0. I have also given multiple Keurigs as gifts, and I have never had any issues.

I would go with the Keurig single brewer. I think it is perfect for a college student. It is small, inexpensive, can male all of the K Cups, and is convenient.

It depends on what sort of coffee drinker she is. Does she prefer a quick cup of fancy coffee, or does she drink regular coffee throughout an afternoon/evening study session. When I was in college, there was no such thing as one cup brewers. But if Keurigs had been available I would NOT have wanted one--too pricey and too fussy. Give me a regular maker--a whole pot costs less to make than one cup of Keurig, and you can always pour extra down the drain.

You say your daughter is a college student -- does she live in a dorm or is she in her own apartment? The reason I ask is when our youngest son went to college he lived in a dorm and we found out AFTER he moved in that other than the mini-fridge and small microwave which were provided he could not have a coffeemaker, toaster/toaster oven or other small appliances in his room. The Scoop has its own filter....no mess....DH keeps his coffee in a L&L so it really is no muss, no fuss. They sell this model at Walmart now I think.....I bought ours at Kohls...it was very inexpensive.
