I read something in another thread that ,to me, was sad and quite righteous. "I'm happy to say I've never had to join or go to an AA meeting". The fact of the matter is that you (all) know good, sober alcoholics. In all professions: lawyers, MD's, police, nurses, accountants, teachers, clergy, shop owners, managers, creative people, and moms and dads , the types of people you deal with every day.

My sobriety date is 12/12/91. I drank because I suffered from a devasting and tortuous mental illness. A loving family, and a dedicated and gentle psychiatrist led me out of the literal heck I was in.The people you read about in the paper or on-line or see on TV are me. The difference is I'm not violent unless it's aimed towards my own self.

I'm grateful I'm not freezing to death tonight. With the help of my Higher Power I'm a sober, productive member of the world.

I'm grateful I can write a charitable check every week (aside from my church giving) to the services that can provide more than my $2 tossed at a guy with a cardboard sign.

I hope you never experience the sadness of losing a son or daughter to addiction.

There is vast hope. And it is in AA. I know members who are 50 years sober and those who are one week sober. Their lives are so valuable.

I have beautiful freinds in AA and ""normal"". They all know all about me. This isn't self-pity---It' unbelievable the things people say. I'm not anti-alcohol...actually I adored it. But I have a sweet life today Thank you for responding

I want to add, that whomever I quoted above, I hope you don't ever have to darken the doors of AA, either as a member yourself or accom[anying your children or a dear friend. I had never even heard of AA when I had to go there. And I heard I was a drunk, no different than the woman begging for matches and money at my car door one evening. WHO? ME? I'm the rich fun girl--the same? And they were absolutely right!

Now I'm privileged to have women trust me and give back what was so freely given to me.

Congratulations on your continued sobriety, Sylvia. That's an outstanding accomplishment. I know that because I lost both a husband and son to alcoholism, my son at age 37. He wanted sobriety so badly but never could achieve it and it killed him.

I've accompanied friends to AA meetings a couple of times, and you're right, it's just a cross-section of the community. It looks pretty much like the same group you'd see at church.

thank you both. My life after 23 (almost) is so good. As you said, kachina, it can appear for some particular reason or no reason. the commonality is that we crossed the line and could not return without help---Think: a pickle can't return to a cucumber. ))-----I' sorry for your losses and I completely understand how tragic this is.

Actually, I admire people who overcome their addictions. It takes a strong person to admit they have a problem and get help. You can't change the past...only learn from it. As BGB said...stay strong!

I did not see the original post, so maybe it is out of context, but I think it means, " I am lucky it did not happen to me." Not a slam against those that are not so lucky. You know, like a "it could have been me, but luckily was not". Just a thought.

sylvia, I've always enjoyed posting with you and will continue to do so.

I did not see the original post, but the first thing that came to mind is one of my favorite sayings....when someone show you who they are, believe them. If the poster feels he/she was misunderstood, maybe he/she will come back to clarify things.

honestly, I don't judge because we all have had or will have things in life to overcome.

I've learned to not say "not me or not my family" because things can change quickly.

There is nothing,nothing at all about what you posted.At lease you seem to be an honest person what is wrong with that.I know i grew up in an alcoholic family and it was awful.It was to bad he(dad) never got help.

Congratulations on your sobriety! The fact that you had the courage to go to AA and not give into this dreadful disease is an accomplishment to be very proud of. I wish you would stop denigrating yourself in your posts and realize what an intelligent and good woman you are.
