I was responding to a poster in the Kitchen Forum, and I suggested that in getting ready for Thanksgiving and keeping on track to make lists, grocery, cleaning, etc.

It reminded me that I'm a big list maker. I'm a stay at home mom right now, but especially when I worked I made lists for everything. It keeps me on track, I get satisfaction when crossing things off and seeing the progress I'm making, it keeps me from forgetting important things I want to get done.

I like good old fashioned paper and pencil lists, on cute note pads for the season that hang on the side of the fridge. No spread sheets, no phones or ipads, no technology, just good old fashioned lists (sometimes even on the back of a used envelope, made in the car as I'm running errands for the day, so I don't forget any of the stops I need to make.

Is anyone else a list maker?

Oh yes. Just about every night I make a list for the next day and often assign time slots to each task (and break) to make it a challenge.
Yes, it keeps it out of my head, on the paper, so keeps me from getting stressed. I don,t think about what I have to do the next day, when I go to bed at night, because it is done on paper before I go to bed. If I don,t get it done, all of what,s on the list, I move it to the top of of list for the next day.

I'm a total list-maker! I make to-do lists and shopping lists.

As for Thanksgiving, of course there is the shopping list because that's longer than usual for me. I kind of lump the items on the list by recipe, which really isn't practical in terms of navigating the store. But it works for me so that I can look at each recipe and make sure I have all the ingredients I need on the list. Then I just take a pen and can check off items as I pick them up in the store.

I also have a to-do list for the Thanksgiving work, since it takes me three days now. The list helps me make sure I do each thing I need to go on Tues, Wed, and Thurs, to make it come together. But I keep the same to-do list that I just put in my recipe binder and I can pull it out each year and make any necessary changes (knowing me, I wrote it in pencil).

Yes, I am a list maker. Grocery lists, around the house to-do lists, to-do lists for work, long term planning lists. It helps me to prioritize, plan, budget, and keep focused so I get things done. It's a great sense of accomplishment for me when everything is crossed off the list and I can throw it away.

I am not, but my husband plans his entire schedule around lists. During the evening, he takes a few minutes to summarize in writing the who, what, when, and why of each work day. It's extremely beneficial to him.

I make lists.

I always keep a pad and pen handy so when I have a mental note of something, I quickly write it down. Then I take that and decide which list it's going on - short term list or long term list.

I keep a grocery list on my desk in the kitchen.

To-do lists and separate shopping lists too. I have a list for each major grocery store. Sometimes when I leave the house I have two lists: the actual shopping list and the stores/places that I need to go that day and why.

Lists keep me organized.

I have always made lists of books to be read, things to pack, personal goals, as well as a daily list and a shopping list. On a sad note, after my father died, I found his list of things to do before he died. It wasn't a bucket list but household chores and other loose ends he was worried about leaving behind.

What happens if you misplace the list, you're lost in a sea of where am I, what am I supposed to be doing, what should I buy...

I respectfully disagree. We teach our students in our college prep program to keep a planner of what they need to do. Studies have shown that when you write things down, you are more likely to accomplish them. Regarding dementia, I think people who make lists ARE using their brain functions . It requires you to focus and analyze what you need to do, when you need to do it, what you need to buy, etc. I think it is definitely a good use of thinking skills ad opposed to remembering and then forgetting things willy nilly. Not to say that there aren't people, and you may be one, who have photographic memories and never forget a thing. I have a pretty good memory, but lists help me to organize my thoughts and plan better. At any rate, I'm not going to worry about dementia. Studies show that people who speak more than one language have less risk, and since I speak three in addition to English, I'm.not worried.
