Sad but true. I work in academia & have been disappointed to see a lack of basic writing skills among staff, faculty, undergrad & grad students. The most common error I see is the use of apostrophes before the letter s when the words are plural & not possessive or a contraction. I know my skills are not perfect, but I do better than many people.

I tutor ms and hs students, and they have a very casual approach to spelling. When I try to tell them a word they wrote is misspelled, they get impatient and say it doesn't matter.

Let us not put all this on the young. I've seen all these mistakes and more in posts here. I don't think the majority of posters on these boards are school kids!

I chuckled at this snippet of a review for a pair of slippers. A common misspelling but it didn't make much sense, either. ""I wore them for one morning around my house. By the end of the day the heals were falling apart."

I'm an English major and a 30 year English and Journalism teacher. Don't get me started on the state of grammar, composition, and spelling in this country. Add to that poor word processing skills, of which I am guilty too, and you have a recipe for language disaster. English is a lovely language and the beauty of the written word should be celebrated, not mutilated or interpreted by auto correct. Alas, it is what it is, and there's probably no turning back.

Then there's the "to and too" problem. Or how about the use of "I" when it should be "me"? For example, "She went to the store with Jane and I" when it should be "She went to the store with Jane and me". After all, you wouldn't say "She went to the store with I", would you?

My dad's teaching of this stayed with me.
