Speed Cameras

Has your state installed a lot of these? Ours has. They were supposedly going to install them only in the vicinity of schools, and work areas, but they are going up everywhere, even on busy commuter routes. No, I have not received a camera ticket violation, but my DH, who is out on the streets all day long, has. I feel they have gone overboard with installations because they provide an easy windfall of cash. How do you feel about the proliferation of these cash cows?

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

I don't know if we have a "lot" of them around here, but I can tell you that something needs to help control some of the really stupid drivers who just automatically drive 15-20 miles over the posted limit.

They're more a revenue source than anything else... Some of the locations I've seen them have nothing to do with pedestrian safety and everything to do with areas where they anticipate drivers will be less vigilant.

From what is saw (David Muir) they are inacurate most of the time and get the wrong car.

Put MORE up! And yes, I've gotten one...a Sunday morning, no traffic, red light, right hand turn...I didn't come to a complete stop before turning into a side street. $75 later, I could've been posting about this 'cash cow', but it did it's job twice...fined me AND taught me to come to a complete stop before making right-hand turns. Lesson learned, yes?

You are exactly right, Stevie. They've now installed them on busy commuter routes. If memory serves me correctly, you and I live in the same area. If everyone did the speed limit on commuter routes, rush hour would last til very late in the evening.

They are a hidden tax revenue raiser and as far as I am concerned, the legislators who voted for them to be installed, I will cast my vote for the opposite person when their term is up!

They were rolled out w/o doing the proper thing here-- adequate signage and flashing lights.

Yes, we do have a lot of them in my city. They have certainly cut back on fatal accidents on our major roads/avenues.

We don't have any in our small town but when we visited Nashville recently, they were all over the place. It's a good thing our hotel provided shuttle service for where ever we wanted to go.

My husband is working in Tennessee and the road he travels on to get to his plant has them at certain intervals. He alerted me to them one time when I was there with him. Those "in your face" flashing lights. Over there, it's just revenue because there's nothing on that road but farmland.

My city had a pilot program for these a couple of years ago. The controversy over it and their apparent ineffectiveness became a headache for the city so it was discontinued and they were removed. It was more about revenue than safety anyway.

In fact, in our area, people are going out of their way to avoid going past these speed cameras to get to their destinations. So the cameras have not really stopped people's driving habits.

Yes,, I do realize that. Did you not see that I said late evening? We have one of the longest commuter times in the country.

That and I've also noted them on only intermittently busy 'back' roads, where they are clearly designed as a 'trap'... Yes, just another tax but one that 'officials' think they don't have to take responsibility for...

Heck, wookie, rush hour around here never really ends as it is!

I hear you all. At first, I approved of them because we were told they would be used near schools and work areas. But when they realized how profitable they are, they installed them everywhere. My governor has raised taxes in one form or another 40 times since 2007. Speed cameras were listed as one of them.

It always slows me down because I have to touch up my makeup and hair before I reach the cameras.
