I'm at that point. After some discussions in the Electronics forum and elsewhere, I have realized that at my advanced age of 76 . . . I just don't want to change anymore. I want to be comfortable and not challenged by foolish new inventions that mean nothing to me. That doesn't mean I have decided to be dumb and backward, there are some new things in 2014 that I like. But if I don't like something, I am not going to go crazy trying to "keep up."

All of my life I have loved challenge. The computer age was fascinating to me, I loved learning all of it and making it my profession since 1980 to when I retired in 2004. But I am done with that now. I need "familiar" and less stress in my life. I want to enjoy what I know. I want peace more than anything in every way. Just let me be.

I mean this in all ways . . . this world has gotten beyond me now. I have realized that and I welcome it. I never thought I would live to say this, but for some reason I have and I'm surprised at myself, but I accept it.

I have fought many battles, but I am done with that now. I feel like a worn out soldier.

I hear that completely! Over the past 3 years, I've purchased 3 cell phones, each upgraded from the last, because I thought I "should" be texting, using apps, listening to music, & surfing the web on my phone. The fact of the matter is, I really don't want to! I only have a cell phone in the first place because I wanted it in case of an emergency, such as car trouble, or electricity out which disables my landline.

I also started a FB page, because I thought I "should." I don't really know how to use it, & don't really want to, either. At least not right now. Maybe after I retire I'll be willing to spend more time learning how to use it.

Over the past 30 years, I've enjoyed the conveniences of technology, but as of today, I'm sick, sick, sick of email. It's just as bad as junk mail but at least easier to get rid of. The "Delete" key is a wonderful thing.

I think there does come a point when we are entitled to just be comfortable with where we are in life & not worry about trying to keep up with every thing new under the sun.

I am also at the point in my life when I don't want many changes. I love the computer, cable TV, Netflix, cell phones, texting, etc. BUT, I frankly don't care to be constantly learning more new things. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

One of my sons said something that really sums up the differing attitudes of family members - depending on their ages. I am of the mind that things are OK like they are and I don't care to learn what changes happen with new devices. My kids and grandkids are just the opposite. When there is a new device available they can't wait to see what is different and what changes and new things they need to learn to use it.

My motto is - No change is a good thing.

Their motto is - I can't wait to see what new changes are available.

Ford, ITA that computers are wonderful and open the world and beyond to us. But I think you and others have reached a place of wisdom in your life where you are aware that change in certain areas is more about someone making money and merchandising rather than actually being a needed improvement. So many things I see advertised today are clearly "created needs". You may be tired and feeling old but you are also wise.

I hear you Ford, read your 1st paragraph and that was me months ago. I'm younger than you, but not being in the work force, it doesn't seem like a necessity. On the job, there's the "I have to's" but in retirement? No, nada, etc., my decision, my life.

I'm with you dear. My husband bought me a smart phone, and it's all I can manage to make a phone call on the thing. It's smarter than I am. No new gadgets for me.

I feel that way and I'm only 54 and I make no apologies for it. Technology should enhance our lives, it should make things easier for us. But if I have to stress over learning how to use something and if what I currently use serves me well and I'm happy with it....then new technology isn't making my life easier.....so why bother with it? I'm not the type of person who jumps all over some new thingymajig just becaue it's out there and everyone else has it. I just don't see the point. I don't think of myself as "set in my ways" because I have and will continue to embrace new technology that surves a purpose in my life. I'm just not going to jump from trend to trend and thing to thing just to say "I got that".

How far does dropping out extend, Ford? To following the news as well? i've noticed my husband slowing down on wanting the newest electronic technology over the last few years. Both of us get cranky with our low-key cellphones:/
