We both work full time, so we work decorating in as we can.

I have off work for Veterans Day and will be decorating the kitchen for Christmas on that day. I will pack away all my everyday Fiesta and bring out the Winterberry. It's pretty much an all-day job, but I enjoy doing it. The Santas will go above the kitchen cabinets and my Christmas bells will come out to the knick-knack shelves at the kitchen sink. I have Christmas garland that also goes on top of the cabinets. And I'll put Christmas lighting above the cabinets, too.

We will put the trees up the weekend of Thanksgiving. The living room tree is our traditional tree. I have a large white tree decorated in blue balls for the kitchen next to the French doors (Years ago, my mother had a white tree decorated in blue balls for our Christmas tree. I thought it was hideous. But about six years ago, I decided that I wanted my own white tree and have done one ever since. I love that tree. Sometimes the white tree has been put up and decorated on Veterans Day, too, and we eat Thanksgiving dinner by candlelight and the lights of the white tree. The first year of the white tree, my parents came down for dinner right after I put the tree up. She just looked at me and smiled.) We also have a tree for our bedroom, done in red lights and Santa ornaments (I just love Santa stuff). It takes a while to get them done, but we manage.

It's difficult to deal with one indoor Christmas tree, let alone three of them because we have six indoor cats who love to rustle around in the trees. They chew the branches, they tear off the ornaments and carry them through the house (we only put unbreakables at the bottom two feet of the living room tree). We literally wire our living room tree to the wall; we have to or the cats would knock the tree down; yes, one year they actually knocked the tree down to the floor...thankfully it wasn't decorated yet. One of our cats loves to nap on a branch at the back of the tree in the bedroom. We know where her favorite spot is, so we keep that area bare, so she doesn't have to deal with ornaments while she's napping.

One year, we said that, as the cats took an ornament, we would not put it back on the tree. Instead we put that ornament in a basket. Well, by the end of the holidays, the bottom two feet of the living room tree was bare and the basket was full. We have very naughty cats!

DH does the outside decorating, usually the Monday after Thanksgiving as he has off work that day.

We always put up the tree the weekend closest to December 15th and take it down on or before January 1st - ready for a new beginning.

I like for my house to look like Thanksgiving on Thanksgiving, the family Fire King dinnerware, fall themed tablecloth/napkins/candles,. etc. Don't want people to have to admire my Christmas décor at Thanksgiving AND again at Christmas

I always started the day after Thanksgiving. Last year we started the weekend before Thanksgiving. It was nice to have it done and ready to light on Friday.

I'm still debating when we're going to do it this year. It depends how much I'm cooking for Thanksgiving - LOL

It comes down right after the New Year.

The weekend after Thanksgiving. It totally ruins my Thanksgiving mood when I'm thinking and planning Thanksgiving dinner and see homes decorated for Christmas. I also think it looks kinda goofy that some houses have harvest decor outdoors while others have already put out Christmas decorations. Bad enough that retailers have to rush the season! I start taking Christmas decorations down on New Year's Day.

I used to start as soon as Thanksgiving was over but now I live where there is an HOA and we aren't allowed to decorate until Dec 11th. So you betcha I am out there right on the 11th no matter what putting up my decor. Then it is required to be down by Jan 2nd. And also - very limited what we can put up - 2 decor items plus lights for Christmas only.

I have to un-decorate for Halloween first.

Then Fall and all my turkey stuff.

And will start easing in the Christmas . . . like the trees in the kids bedrooms, my bedroom, etc. Lights outside but not turn them on until Friday after Thanksgiving.

I usually leave everything up till the 12th day of Christmas (Jan. 6), but I'm having a knee replacement on Jan. 5. . .so Christmas items will come down earlier this time.

insomniac, best wishes on your upcoming surgery. I hope you will keep us posted afterward about your progress. I need to have both knees done, and can't get up the courage to do it. I admire your decision to move forward.

So you betcha I am out there right on the 11th no matter what putting up my decor. Then it is required to be down by Jan 2nd. And also - very limited what we can put up - 2 decor items plus lights for Christmas only.

Isn't that only for the outside?

You can put your tree up inside whenever you want, right?

As long as it can't be seen from the outside. I got "the letter" one year for putting my window candles out before Dec 11th, and i was told we have to keep the garage door closed so the tree wasn't seen from outside. (our house is like a southern shotgun house - you can see all the way through it from the street)Our solution to that was to buy a garage door screen that blocks the ability to see into the house.I think our HOA president is a voyeur - he rides his bike around all day long and complains about things people have in their homes. I hate him and I don't say that word often.

Southern Shotgun House. Had to look that one up. Never heard of it. So you leave your garage door open all day?

Outside . . . yes

Inside . . . no way

I don't see how they can do that. Crazy.

I'd like to read the covenants wording on that one!

And having read them prior to closing & signing on the dotted line . . . IF they say what you say they say . . . I wouldn't buy a home in that subdivision.

They are called shotgun houses because in the olden days they said you could shoot a shotgun straight through. In our case - previous to getting the garage door screen - we could stand in the street and look into the house and see through to the lake on the other side . Most plans in Florida they build ranch style homes but they do not face the main door toward the street - the garage door faces the street and the home is oriented so the main entry is on the side. This way they get the most amount of homes around whatever central attraction there is - in our case a lake. So the rooms you would normally expect to be in the rear of the house are in the front - like the laundry and the kitchen and the main living room is in the rear of the house with one wall totally a glass door facing out to the view of the lake. When we get company they have to walk halfway down the length of the house to the door- then they enter into the area next to the living room.
