The tree and the other decorations go up two weeks before Christmas and come down on the 26th. By 10:00 AM on the 26th there's no sign of Christmas at our house.

Sounds almost like me, gidget. We always put up the tree the weekend closest to December 15th and take it down on or before January 1st - ready for a new beginning.

I like for my house to look like Thanksgiving on Thanksgiving, the family Fire King dinnerware, fall themed tablecloth/napkins/candles,. etc. Don't want people to have to admire my Christmas décor at Thanksgiving AND again at Christmas

I always started the day after Thanksgiving. Last year we started the weekend before Thanksgiving. It was nice to have it done and ready to light on Friday.

I'm still debating when we're going to do it this year. It depends how much I'm cooking for Thanksgiving - LOL

It comes down right after the New Year.

Christmas decorating begins after Thanksgiving. No mater what the retailers want me to believe.

We may travel this Thanksgiving so definitely not before Dec 1st.

The weekend after Thanksgiving. It totally ruins my Thanksgiving mood when I'm thinking and planning Thanksgiving dinner and see homes decorated for Christmas. I also think it looks kinda goofy that some houses have harvest decor outdoors while others have already put out Christmas decorations. Bad enough that retailers have to rush the season! I start taking Christmas decorations down on New Year's Day.

I used to start as soon as Thanksgiving was over but now I live where there is an HOA and we aren't allowed to decorate until Dec 11th. So you betcha I am out there right on the 11th no matter what putting up my decor. Then it is required to be down by Jan 2nd. And also - very limited what we can put up - 2 decor items plus lights for Christmas only.

You can put your tree up inside whenever you want, right?

As long as it can't be seen from the outside. I got "the letter" one year for putting my window candles out before Dec 11th, and i was told we have to keep the garage door closed so the tree wasn't seen from outside. (our house is like a southern shotgun house - you can see all the way through it from the street)Our solution to that was to buy a garage door screen that blocks the ability to see into the house.I think our HOA president is a voyeur - he rides his bike around all day long and complains about things people have in their homes. I hate him and I don't say that word often.

I'll start decorating around the second week of December. I usually leave everything up till the 12th day of Christmas (Jan. 6), but I'm having a knee replacement on Jan. 5. . .so Christmas items will come down earlier this time.

Ugh. I don't know how people live like that. No one is gonna tell me what color to paint or when to do what. Ridiculous.

I have to un-decorate for Halloween first.

Then Fall and all my turkey stuff.

And will start easing in the Christmas . . . like the trees in the kids bedrooms, my bedroom, etc. Lights outside but not turn them on until Friday after Thanksgiving.

insomniac, best wishes on your upcoming surgery. I hope you will keep us posted afterward about your progress. I need to have both knees done, and can't get up the courage to do it. I admire your decision to move forward.

They are called shotgun houses because in the olden days they said you could shoot a shotgun straight through. In our case - previous to getting the garage door screen - we could stand in the street and look into the house and see through to the lake on the other side . Most plans in Florida they build ranch style homes but they do not face the main door toward the street - the garage door faces the street and the home is oriented so the main entry is on the side.This way they get the most amount of homes around whatever central attraction there is - in our case a lake. So the rooms you would normally expect to be in the rear of the house are in the front - like the laundry and the kitchen and the main living room is in the rear of the house with one wall totally a glass door facing out to the view of the lake. When we get company they have to walk halfway down the length of the house to the door- then they enter into the area next to the living room.
