What's next?

Marriage rights are being expanded all across the nation, and New York's highest court has joined the club. Except, as the Albany Times Union notes, "the change is probably not one you were expecting." This one involves half-uncles and half-nieces, and from now on, marriages between them are legit in the state. This particular case goes back to 2000, when 19-year-old Huyen Nguyen wed half-uncle Vu Truong, 24. Her mother is his half-sister.

All was well until 2007, when immigration officials seeking to deport Nguyen argued that her marriage was illegal given the blood, or at least half-blood, relations, reports Reuters. Not so, writes Judge Robert Smith: "First cousins are allowed to marry in New York, and I conclude that it was not the Legislature's purpose to avert the similar, relatively small, genetic risk inherent in relationships like this one." The deportation case continues, reports Newsday, but now Nguyen has a better chance of winning.

The OP obviously has an agenda, but one thing has nothing to do with the other. NY can close the loophole by not allowing first cousins to marry.

Calling all History Buffs:

Don't want to be accused of poking a bear, but I'm asking seriously....other than the DNA angle, why is it not OK? Our ancestors married cousins all the time. When did it become socially unacceptable? Early 1900's? And why?

That objection had to do with older family members taking advantage of young female relatives.

No, it isn't the same difference. It's about a recessive gene matching with another like it.

Woody Allen did not marry his adopted daughter. Soon Yi Previn was adopted by Mia Farrow when she was married to Andre Previn. Woody and Mia were never married and never lived together.

Woody and Mia adopted a child together, Dylan, and had a biological child, Ronan Farrow. Soon Yi is their sister. So their father married their sister. It doesn't matter that Mia and Woody didn't get married. He was still a parental figure.

Well, I couldnt personally have an intimate relationship with anyone for whom I may have changed their diaper at one time in their life...which, presumably, a parental figure does for their child, adopted, blood or step....

Soon Yi was out of diapers by the time Woody and Mia started dating. I didn't realize he never lived with Mia. That's strange. But I think they both are (Mia and Woody).

I was actually speaking metaphorically in my changing diaper comment- Presumably a parental figure should have that kind of (nurturing and caretaking) relationship with a child..not a Sxully intimate one...

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Woody and Mia or Woody and Soon Yi never got together.....
