Question about hot tub

I would like to get an outside hot tub and hubby is against it-says our electric bill will go up $100.00 a month. We live in the midwest-Southern Illinois. That amount seems high to me....like for a swimming pool. I've done some research online and a lot are saying their bills only went up about $15-$20 extra a month and some of the posters were from the northern part of the US. I was wondering if anyone here could give me any information as to the extra cost-or any other useful information. At this point I was only wanting to use the hot tub spring, summer and fall-I don't see me wanting to use an outside one when it is winter-but everyone says that's the best time to use one. I know it would cost more to heat one during the winter so I probably wouldn't just for that fact.....and to appease my DH! LOL. TIA.

We love in NY and have an outdoor hot tub and love it. We only pay MAYBE $10 extra a month for it. And we use and enjoy it year round, especially in the winter. It isn't huge, it seats 4 people comfortably. It is great for any aches and pains. Even if you decide not to use it during the winter months it still has to be heated to insure the pipes don't freeze. Go for it, your hubby will enjoy it and cost is minimal.

Thanks mardy-I knew an extra $100.00 per month for electricity seemed high...I think hubby will enjoy it too. I just want a small one like you have.

I'm in Upper Michigan and our electric bill increased by about $50 a month. We only use it in fall and winter- from October to end of April. We turn it off when there is no fear of it freezing up. We heat it in summer for a week when the kids come to visit.

If you could get the wattage of the tub you're considering, you could call your electric company and get an estimate.

We have a hot tub on the deck for 8 years now. Our electric is the same no matter what (always too high IMO). So the tub makes no difference. This is in PA.

Now the past 2 years we did empty it in Winter because I couldn't take getting in and out in the cold the past 2 years. But the other years we went in it in the snow.

Now- we go in it in Fall and Spring. We keep it @ 99 or 100 degrees and its amazing for my bad back!

Ours has 5 sitting areas and 1 lounge (laying) area.

Well if you get one I guarantee you will love it!

Thank you all for your replies. You were all more helpful than the salespeople I've talked to when it came to this question! I don't know where my hubby came up with the $100.00 a month extra. I am going to push forward on this...I know hubby will enjoy it when it gets here. Also the idea about checking the wattage of the tub is another good idea! Have a great day!

I live in Ohio, west of Cleveland. We have a hot tub on our deck and we run it all year round. Our electric bill in the winter is about the same as our electric bill in the summer running the a/c. That's for a normal winter.
