How many have changed out their wedding set for a new one?

I have a beautiful diamond ring that DH bought for me made from the diamond in his mother's wedding set. It is a 1/2 carat flawless diamond with some small stones on the shoulder of the ring.You can't buy a diamond of this quality any more. I recognize that my set is old fashioned by todays styles but I love my ring and would not ever consider replacing it. I think my DH's feelings would be very hurt if I wanted to replace it as well. It's not the cost of a new set - I know several women who have replaced their wedding set with CZs.

Several years ago my original setting broke and I was smart enough to buy a setting that has both white and yellow gold on it so I can wear it with either metal. But that was a necessity as the setting had completely fallen off the ring. Are women such slaves to fashion trends that they can't appreciate the classic beauty of an old ring set ?

I was just asking my DH about this - his answer was -- Unless you have a family stone as I did a guy has to save for months and months to buy a diamond ring for the woman he loves. It is not something he does lightly but with great thought and feelings. I would think it would be very hurtful for a woman to tell him she doesn't like it anymore and wants a bigger or newer one.

A friend of ours we saw at breakfast yesterday had a new ring set and was showing it to me and my DH said - when she was flashing that around did you see the look on his face - he was openly upset with her. I asked what they did with her original rings and she said she gave it to their 13 year old granddaughter.

You can't buy a diamond of that quality any more? Small sizes can be purchased at any quality. They are abundant and relatively inexpensive.

I think it's a personal choice to purchase a new set just as it's yours not to.

Some people are practical and skip the whole 3 month salary tradition and opt for simple wedding bands.

Wedding set? No. We were far too poor for that. We were still in college. He bought me a 1/2 carat diamond later which I was SO excited about it! Then years bought me a bigger diamond and later a diamond band. I cherish them all, cherish my husband and he cherishes me.

It didn't make any difference to either of us when we were married and gold bands were the best we could afford (and gold was cheap then too!). He was really excited to finally get me a diamond, and we were both thrilled with the bigger one.

It's the marriage and the people that are iconic and cherished to us, not the hardware! I am so glad hubby didn't think that gold band was one and done for me for rings! He's not that way at all. He had to really sacrifice for the gold band, but how wonderful he was able to buy something else later on! We're thankful for our blessings.

My mother has had a wedding set, a bigger set, and then a bigger diamond through the years. My dad could care less what she bought or wore as long as she looked nice. Which was why the marriage to that fashionista lasted!

That entire 3 month salary thing is just a bunch of krap the industry made up to make guys buy more expensive rings.

I'm on my third set. I didn't really like my original one and traded up. I lost that one and was heartbroken.

The one I have now has sapphires that were from my grandmother. I incorporated that into a new setting.

My husband's feelings would never be hurt over something like that. Our marriage is a good, solid one - much more important than a ring.

He doesn't even wear his. LOL

I guess i'm wondering if women take their husband's feelings into consideration when they do this. I am aware that sometimes men surprise their wives with new - more modern wedding sets, which is awfully nice of them.

When we got married we were too poor for an expensive wedding set...years later I got the two ct diamond with 1 ct ring wrap lol..

What I put in bold answers your own question when you read the remainder of your comments.

Have you ever researched the origin of that ring you hold so dear? What it symbolizes? I mean really research, not the sites that are selling "jewelry". There is much to read. One interesting part (not the only part, by far), is the use of rings to indicate ownership, you know, by a guy. He'd have a harem of ringed servants. Nowadays, I suppose a guy could do the same thing if he wanted to…throw a woman a shiny piece of metal with some sparkly hyped-up-diamonds in it and she'll be blinded to the fact he's got a little missy on the side. Just saying, times haven't changed much in some areas of thinking.

Also, diamonds are held in reserve so that the unknowing will think they are rare. It drives up the cost, it makes something which is common appear valuable to the naive who think they have a rare jewel of some kind. Silly commoners, they say, as they buy other true rare gems for themselves and loved ones.

So to answer your question (only the part I put in bold). Yes. And they brag about it too.

OK I guess my husband is just particularly sensitive. Of course my diamond was his Mother's and before that his grandmothers so it has that sentimental value to him as well. He has given me other diamonds over the years - not rings but necklaces and earrings etc - and I have to say , none of them have the sparkle and life to them as this old stone. The quality is not the same with new diamonds anymore.

Yes, I have two wedding sets, one from my late husband and one from my current husband.

First set was white gold, second set is yellow. Upgraded from one carat solitaire to two.

Both beautiful sets, the original is in the safe should anybody ever want it, it had a more Victorian filigree cage setting supporting the prongs of the solitaire, the newer set is more simple, just white gold prongs surrounding the solitaire.

Love both husbands, love both wedding sets.

There are good diamonds out there, but you're not going to find them at the mall from a chain jeweler.

Old mine cuts have a particular beauty about them...my mom had one. However a GIA certified diamond with excellent specs (modern cut) can be exquisite.

I have my MILs diamond engagement ring/pendant. When she could no longer wear it due to rheumatoid arthritis, she had it made into a pendant. The jeweler did a beautiful job of redesigning the ring into a custom piece which maintained the original ring design. I have never seen one before or since even similar to hers. It had been in FILs family for several generations.

Anyway, several years before she died she called me and said she had something to give me. When I went to see her she pulled out this black velvet pouch and in it was the pendant. I knew immediately what it was and got really teary eyed as she told me she wanted me to have it ... and wear it. I do wear it on special occasions and think of her with love every time I do. She was such a precious mother!

I have thought of having my original diamond wedding set reset but just haven't taken the time to do it. Yes, DH purchased a new set for me on our 35th wedding anniversary and I wear it all the time.
