Is This Going Overboard????

In Solon, Ohio, 20 miles southeast of Cleveland, two schools will shut down Thursday so health officials can disinfect the buildings. The school district stated in an e-mail that it made the call after learning that a local middle-school staff member may have been on the same plane — but not the same flight — as Vinson.

Just being cautious? Or a hysterical reaction?

Scientists proved that the Ebola virus can be exchanged in primates "through the air" (not just bodily fluids). If this staffer has a temperature, perhaps there is a reason for closing the school.

I would call it more fear of the unknown. Misinformation and blunders haven't exactly instilled confidence in many people.

The staffer has no signs of any illness.

That was one type of virus only, Reston Ebola.

It's not true for the strain that's now prevalent.

Better to go ""overboard"" than to take an unnecessary risk.

Even if the risk is minute.

I don't think hysteria has anything to do with it. Are people running around in a panic?

I think it is being overly cautious.

Follow my logic here, but the schools could be thinking of the what if. What if they had the info that someone was on the same plane before it was disinfected? What if they knew that and didn't disinfect the school and then someone does turn up Ebola positive? What will the lawsuits be like if that happens?

I think they are covering their behinds.

I think so, too. I assume the teacher must have been inside the school after her theoretical exposure, that would be the only reason I can think of.

Whether or not they are trying to "cover their behinds", childrens' health could possibly be involved (as well as staff).

This staffer wasn't even on the same flight as the nurse.

I think the school is going waaaay overboard and I would certainly send my child to the school w/o the so called sterilization.

If I had a child with a compromised immune system, I would be more worried about the illness that has already killed several children.

I personally think it's an over-abundance of caution but I don't have a problem with the precautionary steps being taken. Although it may have been more helpful if they knew the staff member had been on the same plane first. If it wasn't the same plane then why the upset.

I heard that it was 5 schools. As already said if it were your child attending those schools wouldn't you want them closed and cleaned? What is the alternative to ""going overboard""? Possibly getting sick with ebola?

I also just heard on ABC news two additional issues. A bridal shop that Nurse Vinson visited while in Cleveland has closed.

A Yale University doctoral student returned home after a research trip to Liberia. He was not in contact with any ebola patients. He didn't feel well and has a low-grade fever. He is now in isolation as ""an abundance of caution"" while awaiting test results to be ready in 24 hours. Don't you think it's better to be careful?

It was the same plane...but a DIFFERENT flight.

The staffer & the nurse were not in the same plane at the same time.

It's a "feel good" action, it will accomplish nothing but it's worth it to give the impression that they are on top of the situation and protecting their students. And since this is cough, cold and flu season; it will keep some clueless parents from freaking out if Susie or Johnny get the sniffles. The misinformation and false information and outright lies circulating are mind boggling.
