I am friends with all of my old ""boyfriends."" I was serious about only one and he's my DH. He's a keeper.

A long, long time ago. He broke my heart in high school. I left to join the Army. When I came back he wanted me back in his life but I was dating my now DH.

Yes, twice. The first was in my teens. We broke up and he joined the Army. After 3-years he was honorably discharged and returned to our hometown. He sent a letter to my parents house not knowing that I had my own apartment. It said to meet him at a certain time at an old spot where we used to go on a Saturday afternoon. I was well over him and never showed up, I don't know if he did either. Later heard that he had returned from his military time in Germany with a raging drug addiction, so I guess my decision was a good one.

In my early 20's I dated a divorced, male co-worker for a year and a half. We broke up when he decided to start dating his ex-wife. About 4 months later he called me for a date. I was already dating my future husband by then and had no interest in seeing him. I heard he returned to his hometown in another state and married a high-school sweetheart. "All's well that ends well."

Only one and after 20 years (and that was 15 years ago). Wanted nothing to do with him after we broke up and still want nothing to do with him. The bad thing is that he's also a musician and we know a lot of the same people. But, thankfully, he's no longer in my immediate area. And all the friends we have in common know to be discrete.

One event still haunts me.

Without saying a lot here I will only say that I wish I would have known how bad things were for him when I saw him. I would have done more to help him but I thought "well, he'll be okay". I should have asked more questions and kept an open mind.

I tried to contact him several years later. Still telling myself he's probably happy. I found a relative who said "please leave him alone". So once again, I left it alone.

I found his obituary sometime later. He had been quite ill with no one to care for him.

There are no redo's in this life. If he meant something to you once, try to keep an open mind and hear him out.

One that I ran into accidentally many years after we dated... I couldn't even remember why we stopped! But he was an okay guy, so I went to dinner with him .. he just could NOT stop talking about himself! Needless to say, that was the first and last date!

Another one that I almost married but broke up with, came around a number of years later and wanted to get together. He had a couple of problems before that really bothered me (I know, I wasn't "flawless"!), but I was curious, so we went out a couple of times. He started "pushing" and I told him I would see him again if we could just be friends for a while and see where it went. He insisted on being "friends with benefits", so the dates and the friendship were over! It was a wise move on my part!

Not really, the non serous boyfriends I remained friends with.

The serious ones I married

I did date a guy once after my late husband died and before I met my now husband. He was nice, brought me roses, looked like Alan Jackson. I had a good time but never heard from him again. Didn't really think too much about it but a couple years later I ran into his sister at a social function. I asked about him and she said he is fine, still single. I said, I never heard from him after our date.

She said he told everybody that I was way out of his league and it was obvious when he first saw me.

How odd.

But, he was probably right. I have to have a man that is very secure with himself.

ETA, It was a blind date set up by friends at church. I have been married over ten years now, he is still single.

Yes. Some I remain friendly with. But with most, I completely cut off communication and don't entertain any ideas they might have about getting back together.

If I end a relationship, there is usually good reason for it. And I don't like repeating my mistakes...
