How many Doctors do you have?

How many Doctors do you have? (EXCLUDING the Eye Dr and Dentist).

And does anyone remember when you just went to your family Dr for everything? (except surgery). and they took care of it all and you were fine!

And does anyone remember when the family Dr gave you ALL your prescriptions? There was no going to the pharmacy!

I think its ridiculous with all these specialists! Yes of course we need some of them for diseases but I don't think we need some others.

SO, I just had my family Dr take over my back medications so I don't have to run to the pain team unless I need injections. (I was going almost once a month for 13 years since my spine surgery and my spine is bad AND its an hour away). Now I can lessen those visits!

These are the Drs I have.

1. I have a family Dr.

2. Pain Dr.

3. Neurosurgeon (I still see for my back because he referred me to the pain team)

4. Cardiologist (because my blood pressure goes through the roof but he doesn't give me BP meds my family Dr does!).

5. Gyno

6. Orthopedic surgeon (temporarily because I need hand surgery).

PS) I DID have 2 cancer Drs too but have JUST been released because Im 5 yrs breast cancer free.

This is what my husband has (lucky him!)

He has a family Dr and an Allergist!

One small town family doctor (and my husband eats breakfast with Doc several days a week).

My husband has more specialists as he has had a very complicated medical history.

I was last in the hospital over forty years ago - C section - and cannot remember ever filling a prescription. (perhaps had them as a child).

GP and gyno. I also go to PT 3times a week and I love her. I have minor to moderate arthritis in my neck so I get a neck massage. She really has helped me so much.

That is it. Yes, I remember the days when we had one famiy doctor who would make house calls. He did perform some surgeries and delivered the babies. Back in the day when I lived in New York, the license plate for a doctor had MD on it so everyone knew the guy behind the wheel was a doctor. Can you imagine what would happen today if a license plate had MD on it?

Most primary care doctors don't prescribe narcotics for chronic pain patients, hence we have to see the pain management doctor once a month for our prescriptions.

Whoa, after your opening comments I thought you were going to say you only had one doctor.

I can't imagine which doctors you think we don't need. There's so much more information and knowledge now than ever before, no one MD can know it all.

I wouldn't want one doctor for everything. I only have a gynecologist and an internist anyway. See the gynecologist once a year and the internist very rarely, thankfully

I have a GP who I see regularly. If all is well, just once a year.

I go to an O B/Gyn about every 3rd year, and the derm about once every other year.

This year, since I've never had a colonoscopy, I'll also see a doc for that, and get that done.

I will say this... anyone with lupus acquires numerous MDs. No way to get around it. Lupus can attack every organ in the body, including skin.

It put me in the hospital last Christmas by attacking the bundle of nerves to my eye, taking away my vision in minutes. Now I also have an eye specialist to add to my list.

With all the advances in medicine over the past few decades, if necessary I would prefer to go to a specialist. They're the most knowledgeable. There is no way a family doctor or general practitioner could keep up to date on all the specialties. No way.

Well, of course if necessary one would see a specialist. Our family physician would offer the referral. This isn't the days of horses and buggies. My husband's PCP is the same as mine and each time he sees him, the doctor pulls up on his screen all of my husband's tests and results and notes, etc. from each of his specialists. They are all forwarded to his PCP after each visit, hospitalization, surgery, etc.

As I said, I have not had a medical problem in forty years beyond routine "maintenance" issues. Had a detached retina a decade or so ago, repaired as out-patient, no prescription needed. Referred to a surgeon in the same building after seeing my regular eye doctor, seen immediately as it was an emergency, went home a bit later.

Up until I got Crohns disease I primarily just used to see my GP and OBGYN.

Now I see my GP, gastroenterologist, infectious disease doctor and my OBGYN. Oh and I go to a dermatologist also. It is the derm I work for.

When I had back surgery in 2005 I did see a neurosurgeon but before the surgery I went to a pain management clinic and saw an an anesthesiologist. I first tried physical therapy, different types of shots like TPI's, epidurals and a few other less invasive types of procedures to try and avoid surgery which I ultimately got and was very successful.

People in chronic pain should be going to a PMC and should be under the care of an anesthesiologist, not a general practitioner they simply don't have the knowledge that an anesthesiologist has.

Two - GP and GYN. I think most who need specialists are glad to have access to their specific expertise. OP, if it's too inconvenient to see so many specialists, stop seeing them. No one is twisting your arm.

Have my Internist, eye doctor (specialist) that treats my Glaucoma and regular checkups, O B/GYN. And a retina specialist that I only have to see one more time.......

If my Internist feels I ever need to see another doctor for something he can't treat, he will do a referral.......So far, lucky with that.......

Just one, old fashioned family Dr. He's wonderful, he's an MD (teaches too) as well as a holistic practitioner. Oh, and when necessary, he makes house calls too. When my late hubby was dealing with his cancer and cancer treatments, our family Dr gave us his personal direct phone number and meant it when he said call any time day or night.
