Grammar -- I rest my case

I just heard this quote on my local TV news given by a mother who home schools her children. She was being interviewed by a reporter about a meth lab that was in a nearby home.

"You just don't know how long it would have went on."

And her children are home schooled by her.

I think if parents want to home school their kids they should have to pass some type of tests then be approved to do it. I'm not against home schooling but I do think these kids miss out on interacting with other kids their age. That's how they learn to fit into society. I hope these parents offer other ways for their children to interact, such as playing sports, etc.

Home schooling cam be a good thing IF the children are taught by the guidelines. A perfect example of out of the guidelines an extreme over exaggerated but could be true case would be Dharma (Dharma and Greg). Her parents taught her what they believed only and I am afraid that is happening to a lot of children these days.

Another example would be a parent that does not believe the Holocaust happened would teach their child that it did not happen. A parent could be a die hard liberal or conservative and teach a child only what they believe not giving the child a view of both worlds. And then again you have the parents that can't put two words together correctly but they are teaching their children.

As for interacting some states now allow Home Schooled children to try out for public school sports.

We have a lot of children who live at our campground. A few go to school but mostly they are home schooled. Mostly they are the kids of the gas wells and pipeline workers. All you have to do is have a conversation with them to realize they are being poorly educated.One kid at the pool this summer was telling me that he was getting behind for his age so now his Mom takes his online tests for him so he can advance.

I doubt these kids who can't pass on to the next grade will be much more than blue collar laborers. That is what their parents do and they don't seem to have expectations that go beyond that. Not to put down any blue collar workers(they are the heart of America) - just saying that life offers an easier way but some people don't try to grasp the brass ring, and have to struggle all their lives.

If Mama keeps looking up and giving answers to these kids it could be possible for one to "slip" through and be in a position of power, not likely but possible.

Some blue collar workers make more than people with a college degree. I am all for Tech training for those that do not want to nor have the ability to go to college.

Let's face it, correct grammar is not taught in schools, in general, as the teachers were not taught. I was constantly, and still am, correcting DD on hers, and she is grown. One real annoyance is when people say, "your and I's hair, or whatever word, instead of your's and my. I hear this in every show I watch, sooner or later. Even if not taught, common sense should tell a person that they wouldn't say "I's book, or whatever word," but not many people have common sense anymore. I have seen poor grammar in books, and the word "an" has completely disappeared from the English language.

I have my issues with home schooling but I don't have a problem with the woman using less than perfect grammar in a setting that wasn't school related. She wasn't instructing her kids. And let's not pretend that teachers always use perfect grammar all the time. Because they certainly do not. I do think that education should be left to professional teachers. I can change a light bulb but that doesn't mean I can rewire my house.
