It's pretty much a no brainer. Everyone knew he was alone in the world and his neighbors no doubt knew about his windfall. So, after he passed away, someone broke in and ransacked the place. They obviously knew he'd been buying up a storm. It's sad. But it's not a shocker. And I see no reason to be critical of his purchases. It was his money and he bought things that made him happy. It was his money, he spent it the way he wanted to. I just hope that he died and then the apartment was robbed and not that he was robbed and died.

Our local news reported this week that a man, an older veteran, who lived in a subsidized city apartment project was found dead from a heart attack. When his daughter arrived from California a week later, she found the apartment unlocked and ransacked. The man had received an inheritance a few months ago and they estimate he'd spent $46,000, shopping on TV since receiving the money. They showed the floor littered with dozens of yellow Invicta Watch boxes and boxes of other watch brands. He'd also bought a lot of SW art which was missing.

I'm thinking this was an "inside job" involving either the housing authority or a company called to sanitize the apartment. There was no sign of forced entry.

I think it was his business that he enjoyed buying what he wanted with his money, sad that he was robbed and died.

The same thing happened when my uncle passed away. He lived alone in Chicago and my aunt (his sister) went to his apartment a few days after he died to go through his belongings. The apartment was ransacked and most everything of value was gone. We're pretty sure it was the landlord but there wasn't any evidence to prove it. The police said it isn't uncommon when someone who lives alone dies.

It's a shame this man was robbed after he passed away. But he spent his money on what wanted and maybe it made him happy.

So, was he robbed then he died (possibly the robbery causing his heart attack and subsequent death)?

Or did he die and it was a burglary after his death?

Either way it sure is horrible!

People like that - you just hope they grow a conscience one day, feel badly for what they've done, and make it up somehow.

Oh thanks!

It can be confusing when somebody says 'robbery' when that refers to somebody breaking in and threatening you with harm if you don't give up the goods, vs 'burglary' which is just a break in where the victim is not involved or physically threatened.

At any rate, I'd love to think that the perp/s will be caught. This is just the lowest of low to break in to somebody's apartment/house and steal their things while they lie there dead.
