possible Ebola case...my local news

Most of the news about ebola has died off since the return of the doctor and assistant who have fully recovered...but it's still in my local news

Even if that happens, or has happened, they'll be on it so fast that it will be contained unlike on the African continent where it went on too long without outside help.

Free.....I agree in part...I don't think we would have an epidemic like what we see in Africa because of our medical services and ability to contain infectious diseases.....however....look at how the enterovirus has spread across this country...it started with just a couple of states and now 90% of the states are reporting cases of it.....stuff spreads like wildfire especially in schools...I'm not an alarmist...just being a realist....most hospitals have limited isolation units....there are also too many people in this country who still have no insurance so the possiblity of people not seeking treatment is high.

The nurses union went on strike on the Las Vegas Strip recently and apparently have little confidence in their ability to fight ebola.

The so-called "die-in" demonstrators, organized by nurses in Vegas for the Planet Nurse convention, said they don't believe U.S. hospitals could handle an Ebola outbreak.

There are only a handful of hospitals in the US equipped to deal with Ebola. Yes, we could have an outbreak here and it could be devastating.

It was only a matter of time.

As long as it is allowed to come in to the country, we are at RISK.

Anyone who thinks they can outsmart a virus is wrong.

Putting American troops in proximity to the area means they come back possibly exposed.

The best way to fight it is to keep it CONFINED to where it is.

That's what this patient did, apparently. She'd been in West Africa and brought it back.

I hope medical personnel got enough new information to advance in treatments. I hope she'll be OK.

I'm more likely to be killed in a car accident than by ebola. Yet, I don't expect cars to be banned because of this risk. I'm also more likely to die from flu since it's easily spread from person to person, unlike ebola.

Yes, there's a risk. There's risk in almost everything. A few factors in the cause of spread of ebola in Africa are the burial practices, lack of healthcare facilities, and distrust of healthcare workers. I refuse to work myself into a frenzy over this.

You are correct as to some of the factors involved in its current outbreak.

However, it is still prudent NOT to let it in the United States. An ounce of prevention IS worth a pound of cure in this case.

It's already been in the US... at least three cases. A lot of new information and treatment techniques have come out of those experiences.

It has also been said that a vaccine may be out in limited edition in 2015.

I agree...no one is in a frenzy here...but let's not be complacent to the point we think we are immune to an outbreak in this country....the ebola breakout is not going away and the vaccine is not available yet...all while the number of deaths rise every day.....we are fortunate that we have an ocean between us and the breakout but that ocean is very small when you consider how easy it is to fly around this world...become contaminated and then fly some more spreading your germs....you can carry the disease for 2-21 days before you experience any symptoms....that along with the fact that so many in this country would not seek immediate medical attention could be a recipe for disaster.

She may be referring to a previous discussion here about ebola, and one person was talking about a frenzy and millions of us being infected. A few other people agreed with her.

But it is not contagious until symptoms are displayed. So it's not like the flu where you can spread it even with no symptoms. Once symptoms are displayed, the people who are affected are those who come into.contact with your bodily fluids. So the likelihood of transmission is lower.

I'm not in a frenzy. I probably won't come in contact with Ebola. But it still makes me uneasy that it's here considering there is no vaccine.

I'm talking about all the frenzy I've seen on these boards over the years. Remember SARS? West Nile? People worked themselves up until they were afraid to even leave their houses.

I in no way am saying to be complacent. I'm simply saying there's such a thing as being overly worried. As mentioned, more people die from flu and its complications.
