why are so many obsessed with to tip or not?

I am waiting for the post when someone has anxiety over tipping the cashier at kohl's for bagging their purchase. what about the person at taco bell? krispy Kreme? how about a post on who we aren't going to tip. ENOUGH.

are we so worried about what another person thinks about you? what about all the Walmart cashiers. surely they deserve more than they are making. should they all have tip cups out as well? ok, rant over.

I don't tip to make friends.

I tip if I think it's the right thing to do.

If other people have questions re: tipping, they are probably caring, generous people.

We need MORE people concerned about others - not more insensitive people out for themselves!

Re: cashiers at big box stores - I work with causes and people who want to raise the minimum wage to make it a livable wage. That's my contribution to that issue.

I tip when I want to. Some would probably feel that I tip too willingly. However, I do what feels right to me. I don't much think about what others might do.

I think it has a lot to do with the other obsession about whether or not folks violate some special law of nature based on what they wear to a wedding...

I agree!! I tip my hairdresser, servers maybe a couple of others I don't have time to list but if you wanted tips just for doing your job you shoulda been a juggler.

LOL! I was recently surprised to hear that most of my friends/co-workers don't tip at the nail salon. I've always done this, so I didn't quite know what to say when they asked me "Why would you tip?"

I honestly don't know the proper tipping etiquette in all situations, but like another poster stated, I tip when I feel like I should. (Mostly in situations where the service provider is tending to me on a personal level - such as the hair/nail salon or when I get waxed.)

I tip when it's customary - and I pretty much know in what situations it IS customary. But not everyone does, or they are in a new situation. For example - living on the west coast, it's pretty much optional to tip/reward at Xmas apt building managers & maintenance people. I understand it's close to mandatory on the east coast. So if I was moving there, I would seek advice. You tip people who perform unique *personal* services for you - in restaurants, at spas and salons, baggage handlers, someone who carries things to your car or into your house, hotel maids who perform extra services, room service, etc. I do think that some tipping that has become standard is dubious, though. A hotel maid's JOB is to make your bed, put fresh towels in the bathroom and make sure you have soap. I don't feel a tip is necessary for that. But if you ask for extra towels, leave your room a bigger than normal mess, have messy kids, then yes I would tip. Valet parking is another one - you often *have* to pay for valet parking - why should you have to tip extra to get your car back? And yes, I *do* tip in these situations, I just don't always feel that I should. Grumble. But - tip a plumber? WT...? No. Srsly - NO.

EXACTLY how i feel and what i do......everyone is different so if i want to tip someone that someone else DOESNT want to tip then why is it such a big deal? why do people say tipping has gotten out of control? it is my money to spread around and use how i want to use it.

My standard is 18-20%, sometimes more. Lunch is $15? To me, it's automatically $20. If I can't afford the $20 I go somewhere that doesn't have table service.

Exactly. I include it into the mental deduction I make when deciding whether I can afford the service or not. My pedicure cost $21, so I automatically budget the expense at $25 to include tip. My nail tech is wonderful and takes good care of me, so I feel it is money well spent.

i dont think she is referring to one particular person, just the number of threads where people ask "should i , or shouldnt i...."

...and there have been an abundance of them lately. once christmas hits there will be a bunch more i am sure about who to give a christmas TIP to....

So you customarily give a 33% tip - if you give a $5 on a $15 check ?
