Scotland voting in a few minutes!

Crazy you can vote at 16 or 17 and seems like many changes will happen if they vote YES to be taken from the UK, do I have this correct? I just want the best for that fabulous country.

I have a distant cousin who is Scottish. He has the opinion that Scotland should remain part of Great Britain. Evidently, this is a very divisive, no pun intended, situation. It's like our civil war without the shooting. Brother against brother, etc. I hope, however the vote turns out, peace will be possible. Each side is convinced they are correct, of course.

The polls have closed and the counting has begun on a referendum that could have historic implications for the United Kingdom. The referendum asked the Scots if they should dissolve its union from England and become an independent country.
We'll be live blogging, as the returns begin to be counted. NPR's Ari Shapiro and producer Rich Preston are in Edinburgh, so expect to see their dispatches.

Results will be in by midnight, ET. Scotland will have to make application to NATO if they become a separate nation. Still up in the air whether they will use the pound as their method of currency or the Euro.

I thought they said they would stick with the pound, ages ago? Did they change their minds on that?

They had many years to think about this. They've had their own parliament since 1999 (along with the desire back then to be independent). There is not going to be anything shocking about their future, should they vote yes.

I heard on TV that she will still be their Queen (like she is Canada's Queen).

terrier: From what I've read the Scots are not thrilled with having them there in the first place. Where will they be moved to?? It's not just nuclear power; it's nuclear weapons, too.

And seriously, found, it's an important question - the younger generation is more against them than for them- it's an issue right up there with currency, etc.

Which also leads to another question - was the voting age lowered to tilt the scales in favor of secession??

You don't just ""move"" a nuclear plant. Decommissioning and waste are going to be key issues. Not to mention there are other foreign companies involved in Scotland's nuclear power facilities. Two facilities alone account for 1/3 of Scotland's electricity.

I was thinking that too. Regarding the power plant....why does the status quo have to change if the vote is yes.

Scotland's government declared two years ago that the voting age would be lowered from 18 to 16 for this referendum. At the time, most everyone thought a solid majority of the newest and youngest voters would help the independence campaign.

But Jan Eichhorn, a professor of social policy at the University of Edinburgh, says that assumption was wrong on several levels.

"The 16-, 17-year-olds are under 3 percent of the vote. So they were never going to be vote decisive," he says.

Eichhorn has conducted surveys of Scottish teenagers, and his findings on their political views defied expectations: The 16- and 17-year-olds are on average slightly less likely than adults to vote for independence.
